124. sorry, i do not believe this photo...
it just doesn't look right, to me.

if it is true, it has happened in an extremely short time, which is one reason i question it. and the face seems to be sort of pasted on.

if anyone knows how she looks, it's madonna.

but it is so chic to put down the chic.

so too!
For a short period of time (of course, waaayyyy before she became famous) she lived on the same block as my brother's pharmacy. So, he knew her birthdate, which at that time was "1956".
Now her BD is 1959.

32. You're welcome
I know that she isn't a naturally "skinny" person, just a petite woman. So, when someone like her who usually looks healthy and in shape suddenly looks kinda "stringy," it's usually a red flag. It's not an age thing at all.

And she's petite like Madonna and is in great shape from hiking, landscaping, etc. To quote my nephew, "Granny has some guns!" But, she doesn't look stringy.

Compare Madonna's arms to a female boxer's, who is just as ripped:

30. Some people...
fight too hard against the natural aging process.

This is just speaking to my tastes, so I hope no one takes offense...but I'd rather see a woman with a few wrinkles, a little fat, some imperfections...than someone who has all the money in the world "personal trainer" herself to death.

But that's just me.

Fit is good, artificial isn't.

I honestly don't get people -- male or female -- who think women look great when they're skin and bones, implanted to hell*, and so botoxed they can't even smile. Ugh.

*I am NOT slagging all women who have implants. But, you know the implants I mean: so fake and/or badly done they are cartoonish instead of sexy.

Honestly, I never cared much for her even when she was young - her looks were too sharp and hard for my taste.

But making fun of people for getting older is just ugly - and it WILL happen to you, SOON.

I realize Madonna diets and exercises more than she probably ought to, she has a Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 thing going on with her arms, but at least she tries to stay in shape...

If I was to make fun of Madonna it woud be about:

Her fake-ass British accent
Her pretensions of being a spiritual guru of some sort
Her slightly scary childrearing ideas
Her constant reinventions and vocal practice, but she has still yet to really deliver a performance that connects on a visceral, human level

I've got too much flab to be making fun of other people's bods...

about 3/4 of an inch and they'd be perfect for those shoes. I have a pair of jeans like that, trouser style and i swear they are the most flattering pants on almost any body type.

several months back. They said never wear pencil thin type pants or ones that taper tight toward the ankle. A wider pant leg especially from the knee down is most flattering on almost all women.
I like her pants. I stopped wearing tight pants a long time ago. Trouser style pants look good and they're comfortable.

84. Good idea!
I'll tell you, seeing tight pants, where they're tight all over, I can't figure how people can stand wearing them. Madonna looks very comfortable and stylish in this outfit, doesn't she?

A guy I used to work with who was impeccable in his dress always said pants should be to the top of the shoe, with a slight break of the pants in front (like a half inch leaning on the shoe) and the back of the pant leg shoe go to the top of the heel of the shoe. The guy always looked perfectly tailored.

If you're really thin and have legs like Elle McPherson, you can probably pull off capris. Of course, Elle could wear a sackcloth and look good. Most women should stay away from capris though. That chop-off comment is very true.

Then again, I'm Madonna's age and just lost 41 lbs. I don't look as thin as she does, but I do have some skin sagging issues. It's just what happens as we age.

102. Longing for the day
when a woman can just exist, without every part of her having to go under the public microscope.

I can't even imagine what it is in our culture that makes it seem normal to pull up a photo of a woman we don't know - or even one that we do - so that we can check out if the skin on their elbows is too tight or too loose (?), if their veins are too visible, and then start pulling up photos of other women's bodies so we can figure out if their breasts are too big or too small ...

It reminds me of the way animals are judged at the county fair. If it weren't a static photo, I'd half expect someone here to walk up to her, pry her mouth open, and examine her teeth.

103. Fuck that. Appearance is subject to judgment in the same way as personality or anything else
Edited on Sat Jun-30-07 10:14 AM by jpgray
You can examine the superficial aspects of someone without pretending to judge their whole worth as a person in the process. It's best to just acknowledge that superficial appearance is constantly evaluated in all people by all people all the time. No one should use judgment of appearance to judge the whole person, but there's nothing wrong with habing an opinion on someone's appearance in isolation.

"It's best to just acknowledge that superficial appearance is constantly evaluated in all people by all people all the time."

Nor do I see it being constantly evaluated in ALL people all the time. I see certain groups are MORE subject to it, and I see it as the cause of much prejudice and bigotry in our culture.

I think it's easier not to be self-critical. But I wouldn't use the word best.

You can't hold yourself responsible for the concepts other people have of right and wrong--you'll be miserable all the time. Try to educate them if you want on why you think they are misguided, but don't bully them if you can help it.

are smart enough to recognize the difference between legitimate criticism and "bullying."

Also, I trust DUers to understand that when a person speaks out against a message that feeds a system of oppressing and demeaning women, they're speaking out against a system, not because they are "getting me (personally) down."

If I speak out against the war, it's not because the war is "getting me down," you know?

How dare she allow any imperfections on her body? What a joke this place can be - one minute, we're all up in arms because people are so superficial that they judge others by the way they look and the next minute, we're all jumping to criticise Madonna's looks based on a couple of photos carefully chosen to highlight particular features.

But of course no one here has ever had a bad photo taken of them or has any physical imperfections. :eyes:

107. yeah she's getting older (almost 50) and she works out --problem here?
i'm no fan of her talent-free performances but the lady is STILL gorgeous from a physical point of view

you're going to get some veins at that age, i actually think if she was heavier and not so muscular that she would be at a greater risk for varicose veins, at least in the legs

you can't win for losing, i guess the only way to get any credit for being a fit attractive older woman is to off yourself around age 42

most women over 40 try to make a habit of posing with their hands up when they're photographed, now you know why, but try doing that when you're celebrity, you just CAN'T walk around with your hands lifted to your shoulder level 24/7 for fear of some asshat snapping a photo

110. I've seen guys in their 20s with a similar muscle/fat ratio. And it's weird-looking then too
With that defined but stringy muscle mass, she'd be better off as far as appearance goes with bodyfat north of 10%, which is where women's bodies naturally gravitate anyway. If she's happy with how she looks, great, but that doesn't mean I have to pretend to like it. :)

128. that is not stringy, that is muscle tone and the fact that like all women her age she has veins
as far as her VEINS, that is not caused by her BMI, fat women of that age also have veins, it's just that people don't usually bother to photograph fat women of nearly 50, i guess we already know that they have veins

i think you have a very unrealistic idea of a fit older woman's body (or an unfit one) for that matter looks like if you think that is stringy

that is not "stringy," nor is it under madonna's control, as another poster said, it's pretty much genetic when the veins start showing

as i pointed out, most women her age elevate their hands when being photographed so the veins will lie flat, for this very reason, it's just something that happens to women with time no matter their condition, indeed, fat women often experience MORE trouble esp. with leg veins

you haven't seen a celeb for awhile and then you are surprised at how they have aged. There is an actress named Carol Lynley that was fairly big in the 60's and 70's.

Then I saw a recent picture of her and was surprised.

We all can have things that age us in our lives. Time, sickness, drugs, etc. I'm sure there are people we haven't seen in years who would do a double take if they saw us now.
