Argh! My grocery store has succumbed to Atkins mania!
I went to the store today to pick up a few things and now you literally cannot turn the corner of an aisle without bumping into a huge display of "Atkins Friendly" food products! Low carb this, low carb that! Big huge book displays at the checkout for low carb cookbooks and Atkins crap!

I half expected to see Atkins approved laundry detergent in the cleaning supply aisle.

Low-carb Calgon! Take me away!

It seems like every type of protein I eat is off limits on the Atkins diet. At least at first.

13. Inquiring minds want to know
Atkins is working miracles for me (have been able to stop taking medication for type 2 diabetes, as well as losing lots of weight and having a lot more energy) but I really don't particularly like meat.

Please tell us how you do Atkins without the meat!!!!

22. should i title this "i'm an atkins vegetarian....ask me anything!"
it perhaps may not be the most exciting menu and i stress that what i do may not work for everybody. but apart from the lack of pasta and bread, my diet really hasn't changed that much. i can eat eggs/cheese/veggies....then there are the soy-based "fake" meats and tofu. once out of induction i was able to use lo-carb pasta and bread as well (which while often not nearly as tasty as the "real" stuff is completely fine with me)....... i also really dig the "think thin" lo-carb bars for snacking (i think they're much tastier than the atkins brand).

i'm also at the stage now that i can "cheat" once in a while and it doesn't seem to adversely affect me.....which means i can have some pizza or french fries or a baked potato once a week and as long as i'm "good" the rest of the week and i'm fine. i also discovered this lo-carb store near me (in LA) where they have all kinds of lo-carb alternatives (lo-carb BAGELS! i completely flipped when i found those.) also the atkins site and several lo-carb cookbooks have a vegetarian recipe section.

so, honestly, except for my attention to a low to moderate carbohydrate intake and the fact that i now stay away from sodas or hi-carb beer, not a whole of a heck of a lot has changed.

but again, i stress, this may not work for everyone. my girlfriend tried going veggie and had a complete biological breakdown. i think it really depends on you.

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 05:01 PM by enough
On Atkins, I have been able to completely go off all medication for type two diabetes. I had been eating "mediterranean" for years.

That in itself is enough for me -- along with the weight loss, way more energy, and lifting of depression, all without medication.

If that's a cult, I'm a member.

By the way, I never eat any kind of food with the Atkins label, or any other "low carb fad food" from the grocery store. Everything is fresh and home-prepared.

17. I applaud people taking care of health issues with diet....my concern,
...it the over emphasis on fad weight loss diets instead of just balanced healthy eating and exercise. My Grandmother controlled her diabetes through healthy eating as well and that can only be applauded, but most people don't really require dietary restrictions to control a health condition.

Mark my words, next year there will be yet another fad diet that everyone swears by.

Just because an older diet plan suddenly becomes the "in" thing doesn't make it any less of a fad. The fact that people take offense to it being called a fad diet is an indication that it probably is a fad diet.

My one thing with the book... Dr. Atkins kept saying, "And you can eat as much as you want of all of your favorite foods." I am thinking, but french fries would be great right now with a side plate of pasta and big biowl of ice cream....and I don't want to eat a slab of steak every night. :)

20. Actually, we haven't. Breads and high starches are relatively new
to the human diet, only in the past few centuries. Processed foods have only come into our diets in the past 40 years.

And in fact, it was only up until the past 60 years or so that we worked hard enough to burn off all the fats added onto our asses from those carbs.

Now we sit everywhere we go, and in everything we do.

We aren't burning off the carbs at all and hence, need to modify our diets accordingly.

However its not the carbs that add fat to our asses, it's the more of everything that we have been eating. That's the real science of the matter.

16. The problem with any specific diet is it's not for everyone.
After reading "Genome" by Matt Ridley, it's clear to me that the right diet for you depends upon what your ancestors ate. Over the millennia people adapted to the types of foods that were available in their region. Some people thrive on a high cholesterol diet. Others get heart disease and die.

You just watch what you eat......stay away from sugars. I used to be a honey freak...drank it in my coffee.....the stuff has like 200 carbs in 2 tbs...lol....after the induction phase you can have a reasonable amount of carbs.....a whopper, or a Coke will kill your qouta for the day though....

27. My low carb story...
In the 1960's when I was a wee little tyke, the doctors suspected I had diabetes. They gave my parents an option - insulin for life or put me on a very strict diet. They chose the diet, which basically cut out all sugar and bread (sound familiar?) I got a lot better, and after two years on the diet, I was able to eat normal.

Thirty years pass by and I've gained a lot of weight, have no energy and get horrible headaches. I start reading up on diets and come across the low-carb diets. This was 1997 or so, and the big one at the time was The Zone. The book talked a lot about blood sugar and I remember my childhood problems. I pulled out my old diet book, which my Mom had kept. Turns out the diet I had in 1967 was almost identical to The Zone.

Many years later and I'm much skinnier, happier, and healthier. I'm no zealot about this, but for me the bottom line is that these diets just work. I should have stayed on it from childhood.

Sugar and unrefined starch is simply not good for you.

Michelob Ultra and Rolling Rock Green Light.

What a pathetic joke.

If you thought beer couldn't have less flavor than MillerCoorsBud Light, than you haven't tried these. The antithesis of what beer should be, and not worthy of a real beer drinker's attention.

Drinking beer should be about enjoying life. Drink a real beer and jog five minutes longer.

47. How am I abused?
And how, pray tell, does eating a low-carb diet make me feel less than human?

I buy very few Atkins brand products, because I choose to go a more natural low carb route (lean meats and fresh veggies). I'm glad to have some of the Atkins products available to me when I occasionally do need something convenient, and it's my choice to buy them or not to buy them. They've gone to the trouble to formulate these products, so bully for them if they make a profit. Nobody's holding a gun to my head to make me buy them.

I'm healthier, thinner, more energetic--pretty much a win-win situation. I am puzzled by your hostility.

44. Gee, I have a diet that's working for me
(although I don't recommend it) - I've had some kind of digestive system upset since New Years' that's caused me to drop 7 pounds already. The doctor recommended a diet of BRAT foods - bananas, white rice, applesauce, white toast, saltines, mashed potatoes without the skin...no coffee!!! no wine! nothing with any f***ing taste. I HATE it. It's kind of the anti-Atkins - all processed carbs except the bananas! F***ing baby food. Yuck. I'd kill for a big plate of steamed broccoli and a piece of salmon right now, not to mention some butter on the potatoes.

Oh well, I'm under 130 pounds again. Look on the bright side, I guess. Although it's probably just dehydration from this damn dysentery.
