3. Good choice.
I like Duke, in that he was a COMPOSER first of all, who happened to work in the idiom of jazz (usually). He reminds me of Zappa, who was also a composer first of all, who happened to work in the idiom of rock 'n' roll (usually).

2. I chose Television.
Just came out this year on Rhino (http://www.rhinohandmade.com). Just bloody incredible.

"The Blow-Up" was the only legit live Television release we had before this one, and this blows it to shreds.

29. WOW! I didn't know this had come out...
...I saw/heard this show. I think they were there for more than one night, so maybe I didn't. TELEVISION should have been THE CARS only better.
Tom Verlaine really was a 'god'.
Anyone remember THE BRAINS out of Atlanta? They did the original of 'Money Changes Everything' that Cyndi Lauper covered. They got 'Mercury Poisoning'(ie signed with Mercury Records) and disappeared circa 1980.

It's worth the price, especially if you were there. Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd are two of my top-10 favorite guitarists of all time. AND THEY WERE IN THE SAME BAND!

He's now playing slide and lap steel (instead of keyboards) Their singer has too much of that "rock mama" thing going on with her vocals, though...

Got to see them in Central Park a couple of years ago.
Completely transcendent. I was blissed out for days.
Also saw Mahavishnu Orchestra in 75. McLaughlin is truly spiritual in what he creates.

15. For something new try Robert Randolph,
"Live at the Wetlands." He plays pedal steel and it is amazing.

As far as all-time favorite live albums:

The Band "Last Waltx"

Miles "My Funny Valentine"

Coltraine "Live at the Village Vanguard"

Monk -his underground CD (I forget the name)

Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus"

The Meters "Live on the Queen Mary"

19. My problem with "Live at the Village Vanguard" is...
...that it's incomplete.

I have the "Vanguard" boxed set (ALL the recorded stuff from all five nights).

It may even surpass "Under the Blood Red Lava Lamp" (#3) among my personal favorites (I didn't include boxed sets). I still prefer "Live in Japan" for Trane (gotta love that over-half-an-hour long version of "Afro Blue"), and Television's new release.

38. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth....
:)

It's almost a toss-up for me with Trane live albums. That was when he was at his best.

Other good trane live albums are "Live at Birdland" and "Live at teh Newport Jazz Festival." I checked out the latter at the library a few weeks ago. It was good but not great. The sound could have been better and a few times Trane went so far off that he got hard to follow.

17. Ok if you like guitar gods
Then get either Walter Trout live cd, "Life in the Jungle" or "Live Walter". This guy is sort of an unknown but man oh man can he play guitar! He's not a bad singer either. Warning- this is somewhat bluesy so if you don't think you like Blues music, then it may not be for you. Another of my faves is the recently released "How the West was Won" 3 cd set from the greatest band in history, Led Zeppelin. No real concept, just ass kickin' rock and roll.

24. went with Coltrane
could have gone with other -- Live in Stockholm; Village Vanguard live; that multi-disc set from the Ole time period from Europe; or a Rahsaahn Roland Kirk live album.

I go with Coltrane on the desert isle theory. What could I stand to listen to over and over for years without it ever getting on my nerves that somehow contains the "history" of all human existence, the DNA we are? Coltrane comes the closest on that count of anything I think.

I also like the live album from Seattle, also from '65 or '66. But "Japan" knocks my damn socks off.

Have you heard the new(er) release that has the only recorded instance of "A Love Supreme" played, in its entirety, live? I will be purchasing it myself very soon.

& now I'm going to have to listen to Live in Japan again, haven't for a few months.

I've been listening to that 5-CD release of all the Jack Johnson sessions that Miles did in 1970. the stuff that didn't make it on to vinyl is even raunchier than the original. Sonny Sharrock is on a couple of the tracks doing second guitar to McLaughlin.

Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 06:48 PM by 56kid
wasn't talking about the merits of the two.
McLaughlin's playing on those sessions is a lot different than he usually plays also. I think Miles must have been pushing/goading him to a different place than he usually gets. There's even a cover of Buddy Miles' Who Knows (under a different name).

34. Coctails - Live at Lounge Axe
A great little band that used to play out of Chicago. Crazy, crazy stuff- mainly a mixture of jam jazz and pop rock. This was a recording of their LAST performance on New Year's Eve 1995. I never had the chance to see them perform, but this album has become one of my most delighted favorites.

The lead singer, Archer Prewitt, went on to found The Sea and Cake, another band that has really grown on me.

Here's a link to more information, as well as a some of their songs in MP3 format:

Live Dead was an incredible technical recording achievement,IMHO. The sound mix still blows me away.

Live Canteen was Traffic's best, I think. The clinking bar bottles and smoky haze contributed to the mood of this recording, I think.

(No offense to marrieds or wives. I'm married and know a wife very well!)

All my friends are married
Every Tom and Dick and Harry
You must be strong if you're to go it alone.
Here's to the bachelors and the Bowery bums
And those that feel that they're the ones
That are better off without a wife.

I like to sleep until the crack of noon
Midnight howlin' at the moon
I like goin' out when I want to
And comin' home when I please
Don't have to ask permission
If I wanna go out fishin'
Never have to ask for the keys.

54. Wow. A man after my own heart.
When I clicked on this poll, I was expecting the preselected choices to be more...shall we say, mainstream. Let's say I'm pleasantly surprised. Heh.

Out of what's listed I had to go with "Live Seeds"...Cave is a frighteningly brilliant songwriter. The only people I think you can really compare him with are Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. And the Bad Seeds are one of the best bands I can think of, especially live. The level of musicianship is amazing.

Coltrane Live in Japan comes in a close second, though. And then Iggy, Television, VU...with that list, I had a hard time deciding.
