Phillies rescue the opposing team's grounds crew

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, left, joins coach Jimmy Williams, center, and a host of other Phillies players in helping the grounds crew at Coors Field to hold down the tarp as a heavy storm forced a disruption in play.

"Shane Victorino wrangled with an out-of-control tarpaulin before a rain delay, then hit a two-run homer after the stoppage in the Phillies' 8-4 win over the Rockies yesterday.

A strong burst of wind caught hold of the tarpaulin as the Rockies' grounds crew tried to roll it over the infield during the seventh-inning delay. Most of the Phillies' bench emptied onto the field to help the grounds crew."

1. Sportsmanship? In professional sports?
Must have been an anomaly.

3. sorry to inject cynicism into the "heartwarming" tale
but the Phillies were trying to ensure that the game would be finished officially, preserving their win.

Had the tarp not been put down, the field could have become unplayable, ending the game before 5 innings were completed, making the game unofficial and necessitating a makeup game. This was "getaway day" for the Phillies. They wanted the win and no extra unscheduled trips to Colorado to complete the game later in the season.

This was self interest, not chivalry. Still a cool story though.

4. it would not have been cool if someone suffocated
which could have happened when some of the grounds crew where thrown under the tarp and could not get out until the Phillies grabbed hold of the tarp.

5. It would have been official anyway..
The rain delay started on the top of the 7th.

I saw the game and the out of control tarp. It would been nice to beat the Phillies last night, but karma intervened after the Phillies helped the grounds crew. I havw to actually give them props and will give it to them.
