Has anyone taught a beagle to retrieve?
We're working on this in obedience class, and the beagle simply REFUSES. We've been working on it all week, and have made no progress whatsoever. She watches me throw things, and sits there. Couldn't care less. We have class in 1/2 hour, and I know the instructor will think we haven't been working. But we have. Well, I have.

Any advice?

1. Beagles track scent, they are not bred to retrieve.

2. That's what I'm thinking.
The instructor says this is to build up to scent work--finding and bringing back the right-scented dumbbell. I just think there's got to be another way to teach her this. Like, just set the two dumbbells right in front of her, and when she focuses on the right one, give her a treat. I may suggest this.

3. lol
It's not supposed to be funny, but I can see her in my mind's eye, sitting there thinking, "I'm not going to go get that for you. If you want it, you shouldn't keep throwing it over there. You have to learn somehow, and if I give you the answers, you will never learn."

4. Yep, that's exactly what she's thinking.
She's also going to enjoy class, when the teacher barks at me for not working. She'll enjoy it a lot.

6. we have a dog here who tears up
ANYTHING that we have touched. If he finds our scent on it, he will grab it and chew it to pieces. I learned that the hard way about a broken sunflower that I painstakingly staked up. He is great at fetch, though.
