And I won't take a lecture on pronunciation from people who say "clam chowdah".

2. In defense of nukular
President Carter pronounced it the same way and he was an retired officer in the nukular navy.

Hell, I'm anal enough that I pronounce the 'n' in environment.

From dictionary.com:

IThe resulting pronunciation is reinforced by analogy with such words as molecular, particular, and muscular, and although it occurs with some frequency among highly educated speakers, including scientists, professors, and government officials, it is disapproved of by many.

Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 10:38 AM by Seabiscuit
You said there's no such thing as "a prostrate". You're correct. There's no noun form of "prostrate". To "prostrate" oneself as in a bow, is the verb form, not the noun form. So grammatically you are correct, and you're mother, while using "prostrate" as an adjective (and it does exist as an adjective) to modify the word "cancer" is still wrong simply because it's the wrong word.

12. There are a few others I find particularly grating
And most people don't even notice themselves doing it.

"acrosst" for "across"

"axe" for "ask"

"heighth" for "height"

and one that's not mispronounced, but just irritating:

seen for "saw" (As in "I seen him yesterday."

:) As a Massachusetts-ite, I also don't like seeing my father's sister being called an insect. :)

I had never heard this until I went to school there for a year in the '80s. As weird as it may seem, though, iit has legitimacy, since this is how it comes out when pronounced with a Maryland accent.

It seems like southerners do this the most. Even Bill Moyers pronounces important with a 'd' in the middle. Drives me CRAZY. It's like the habit of pronouncing Washington with an 'r' in the middle -- if a person can READ, shouldn't he/she know how to correctly pronounce most common words?
