Name a song that mentions a specific roadway.
This is a follow-up to my train thread from yesterday, probably because I am listening to another Kraftwerk song- this time it's "Autobahn."

Since roads make up so many songs, it should be a specific roadway- "Route 66" counts, but something like "The Long and Winding Road" wouldn't.

1. "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 11:59 AM by SteppingRazor
"I wanna ride down over Mulholland."

"All the vampires ... move west down Ventura Boulevard."

On edit: And, hey, would fictional roads count? Like The Doors' "Love Street," for example?

10. highway 101 - social distortion
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bx_ILfZIrDw

Take a drive baby up the coast, yea highway 101
I’ll pass Ventura and Santa Barbara too, just as fast as my motor runs
Gotta pocket full of memories, some happy and some are sad
Gotta girl standin’ by my side through the good times and the bad

Chorus:
Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains

Sick boy, sick girl, looking nice dressed up on a Saturday night
Take a walk downtown for a while and chase the pale moonlight
I can still hear the mission bells and the train rollin’ through your town
Gonna leave this world behind, we’re Southern California bound

Chorus: x 2
Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains
Follow the palm trees under the California sun
I believe in love now, I believe in love again

"Where I come From" by Alan Jackson
It's a three-fer!

Well I was rollin' wheels and shiftin' gears
'Round that Jersey Turnpike
When Barney stopped me with his gun
Ten minutes after midnight....

I was chasin' sun on 101
Somewhere around Ventura
I lost a universal joint and I had to use my finger...

Well I was headed home on 65
Somewhere around Kentucky
The CB rang for a bobtail rig
That's rollin' on like thunder...

41. I-40; Desperation Road - Michael Martin Murphy
Edited on Wed Jul-11-07 01:32 PM by ashling
Driving west out on 1-40 on my way to taste some California wine
A broke down family flagged me down near the Arizona line
Their whole world was in a pickup I guess it couldn't pull the load
It was just our vacation but to them it was desperation road

The lines on their faces told the story of the places that they'd been
Now their home is a highway that never seems to end
Empty dreams and empty pockets sure can make a heavy load
To some of us it's just a highway but to others it's desperation road

Their eyes had a sadness from another place in time
A silent reminder that the grapes of wrath still make bitter wine
And it sure makes you wonder bout all the seeds our country sews
Which of us will be the next to travel down desperation road

I helped them start their pickup and watched them as they faded out of sight
Guess the last thing I remember is the faces of the children in my lights
That night in a motel room I had a dream that made my blood run cold
I saw my own wife and family standing out on desperation road

And their eyes had a sadness...
Could be your own wife and family standing out on desperation road

69. Christine Lavin - The Dakota
Mentions 3rd Avenue and 72nd Street in NYC.

It was a Monday morning, I was coming in from a long trip on the road.
I flagged a cab near the East Side Terminal,
I said, "Please take me home."
We drove up along Third Avenue, crossed through Central Park.
When we came out at Seventy second Street,
I felt a cold chill in my heart.

Every time I see the Dakota, I think about that night.
Shots ringing out, the angry shouts,
A man losing his life.
Well, it's something we shouldn't dwell upon,
But it's something we shouldn't ignore.
Too many good men have been cut down,
Let's pray there won't be any more.

You can see the rest of the lyrics on Christine's website: http://www.christinelavin.com/00113013thedakota.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYq9iZIZoNQ

I should just get out of here and start driving south on Interstate 5
But I need to stay near, in case you suddenly remember that I'm alive

But I have this nagging fear that sex was all you needed
I've tried to persevere; I guess I've not succeeded

And is it sexist to say
that I thought just boys were meant to behave in this way?
And though you seemed quite sincere,
will you even recognise my face this time next year?

Well I'll remember how your eyes sparkled in the moonlight
You can surely sympathise; I just wanted more than one night

And yes there was one particular glance that made me afraid
That you were just seeing me as a chance of getting laid

With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

The turnpike is the Mass Turnpike.

75. negativland, "A Big 10-8 Place".
I don't remember the Contra Costa County roads that are named off the top of my head, but they're there. You need to know which ones to use to shop lift the steam cleaner to remove the dog juice from the orange carpet. While you're invisible.

Tori Amos.

Referred to "the Ventura" And "The 101"

Same thing really, unless the Ventura was meant to refer to the 134. Don't think it would make for good continuity in the song that way though...

85. Also, 2 more Bruce songs (off the top of my head):
Born to Run : "Sprung from cages out on Highway 9"

Spirit in the Night : "It's a mile down on the dark side of Route 88"

I probably drive on the aforementioned Route 88 everyday, too.

88. Highway 51 ~ Dylan
Bob Dylan
» Highway 51 Blues

Highway 51 runs right by my baby's door
Highway 51 runs right by my baby's door
If I don't get the girl I'm loving
Won't go down to Highway 51 no more.

Well, I know that highway like I know my hand
Yes, I know that highway like I know the back of my hand
Running from up Wisconsin way down to no man's land.
< Lyrics found on http://www.rare-lyrics.com >

Well, if I should die before my time should come
And if I should die before my time should come
Won't you bury my body out on the Highway 51.

Highway 51 runs right by my baby's door
I said, Highway 51 runs right by my baby's door
If I don't get the girl I'm loving
Won't go down to Highway 51 no more.

89. "Telegraph Road" by Dire Straits -
actually kind of surprised this hadn't been mentioned yet! Fantastic song...Mark Knopfler concluded the show on his most recent solo tour with this. As an FYI, Telegraph Road is a major north-south thoroughfare in Michgan that runs through Detroit. Knopfler was inspired to write the song during a bus trip down that particular highway...
