And has a virtual tour, too!

The place has been redone, updated, including knocking out the wall in between what we called the "breakfast room" and the kitchen to make it all one big space. There are also other big changes, but too many details to bore you all with...

If you take the tour, guest bedroom 2 was my little sister's and my room.
http://tinyurl.com/2y5rad

While I recognize so much of the place (lived there 15 years), the only main thing that has remained is the fireplace (they painted the beautiful wood white...) and the black and white tile floors in the main entry hall...and we did NOT have that hideous wallpaper that is now in the formal dining room...

Am so taken in by going through this place online...it has so many memories for me.

Lived there from 1954-1969.

Wish I had gone by it when I was in OKC in June...would have requested an appointment.

The elm tree to the left on the front view of the house is one I climbed as a child...found my first robin's nest there.

on edit:

The back patio area--I remember when the big doorway was put in the dining room. It was my entry to my "stage" where I invited neighbors to come watch plays and ballets I created...I would dance on the patio....

5. hello whoa!
cool house!

Nichols Hills, I remember now you said you lived there. It doesn't look old enough to have been there in 1954. And you don't look old enough to have been there then either ;)

:hi:

7. Awww..shucks, SPK!

The house was built in 1947. We bought it in 1954...moved in when I was 4 months old to the day. I remember my little sister coming home from the hospital in October, 1955. The room called 3rd Guest Room was the original Master Suite.

My mom pulled down all the shades in that room and told me to be very quiet. My sis was sleeping in a porta-crib that actually folded up in a big hard side suitcase when not in use. I remember wondering why I had to be so quiet since the baby was already asleep. My mom then went into the bathroom, and I took the opportunity to sneak over to a window and peeked out around the shade to see if there was something outside was the reason I had to be so quiet, but didn't really see anything that made sense as to why the shades had to be drawn against the world out there. :eyes:

9. I am extending my condolences here...

because I know how hard this can be.

My Mom and Dad built their home in 1952. I was just a baby then, but my memories are forever rooted there. We had 5 beautiful acres to roam as my brothers and I were growing up. Mom sold it back in 1977, several years after my Dad died. One night, I parked in the driveway, and drank myself silly. (The house was vacant.)

Our house is gone. Mobile homes sit there now. I cannot bring myself to drive past it these days.

I have learned this much over the years. You can always go home...you just can't stay there.

14. I'm in the same boat as Contrary1 -- the house I was raised in is gone.
It was torn down as part of a large urban renewal project but the actual lot never had a new structure built on it --it's a pocket park.

16. Do you ever dream about being in that house?
I still have dreams of being in my old home, almost like events that did happen mixed up with adventures I would like to have had.

24. No, but I have very clear memories and could probably built a model
with each room laid out complete with nooks and crannies. It was a small, old house with many small rooms.

15. That's cool
I drove by my old house in a little town in Minnesota this weekend. I lived there until I was 7. It looks different but still recognizable. The town looks different, smaller somehow. I used to walk home from school and it seemed like such a long way but it's really only a couple of blocks. The school is still there, but bigger.

17. One of the houses I was raised in is worth approximately 1.6 million dollars!
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 11:38 AM by Radio_Lady
... according to comparable real estate sales at www.zillow.com

I can't remember how much my father and mother paid for the home, but we lived there through much of my teenaged years. Later, they sold the property and started to rent apartments. I think my father must have blown all the money they made, and also my Dad was very ill for 11 years. After Mother died in 1991, I couldnt' believe she had so little money that she was still working at age 70. We had been sending her $50.00 a month, but had no idea how badly off she really was.

A few years ago, my husband and I knocked on the door of the property on Ixora Circle, Keystone Point, off Biscayne Boulevard, in North Miami, Florida. The couple who lived there at the time was kind enough to let us in.

The owner and his wife had really improved the original property -- finally building the swimming pool, cabanas, and boat dock my father never could afford. The room I lived in had been made into a media room for TV viewing. How appropriate!

It was a good experience!

20. Good for you to go and ask to have a walk down Memory Lane!
Last time I went inside my old place was well over 35 years ago when a woman I knew from childhood had purchased it.

I do know that in '54, my parents bought the house for $44,000--a huge sum of money back then.

23. Funny, I seem to remember about the same for our house ($41,000)
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 12:33 PM by Radio_Lady
Single-family, three small bedrooms, two baths, on a slab foundation, with screened in porch in the back, and a walk-out to the lawn in back, on a tidewater canal.

I think it was 1954 -- the same year as yours!

18. Great house
It looks brand new! Not built in the 40's. Definitely something to be said for older construction.

22. It was, and apparently still is, solid construction.

The family room (we called it the Club Room) was added in 1958. I remember it well, just as I remember the circle driveway in front being added in 1957, the patio added on in 1960 when the garage, which was an integral part of the structure then, was converted into a divided indoor/outdoor access storage rooms.

The redesign, as it stands now, has my brothers' bedroom turned into the Master Suite, and the maid's quarters are now the Master Bath. The Powder room has been enlarged by taking down the wall from the boys' bathroom to create a much larger Powder Room.

As a designer, from what I can see from the photos, I am extremely impressed with the structural makeover. The wood flooring in the Family Room looks to be the original hardwood flooring we had installed there.
