1. They gave me a bunch of that shit last time I was in the hospital
Edited on Sun Jul-22-07 11:20 PM by Droopy
for mental illness. I think they were purposefully trying to knock me out. I ended up needing to be transferred to another hospital after I took the drug. I blacked out in one hospital's emergency room and came to on the psych ward of another hospital. I had no memory of how I got there. The medics came and loaded me onto a gurney and into an ambulance and transported me to the other hospital and onto a lock-down psych unit and I didn't recall any of it.

4. IT's much better than trazodone
I got converted in my trip to the psych ward a couple years back. The Trazodone was effective but the hangover was a bastard, and it gave me serious night munchies. I still get munchies with Ambien but not as much. And I get a little gust of energy before I wake up sitting on the couch will a bowl of chipdip in my lap and a pair of cats eating my chips.

Plus I like that whole shaky thing going on--- no wait, that's a side effect from the lithium...

7. I once had an Rx for Trazodone as a sleep aid.
It was horrible. I didn't even finish the bottle.

9. Yeah, I took it for seven years
It's crap. I had undiagnosed sleep apnea at the time too, so that didn't help me much. The Ambien's a pretty good drug, as long as you don't mix it with stuff like alkeehol (I don't drink so that's not a problem).

10. It caused me terrible nightmares, and I was always grouchy and irritable the next day.
I have enough trouble with nightmares. I don't need to take a drug that exacerbates them!

12. I remember that from traz, too
I don't remember a whole lot of the Ambien dreams, thankfully. UNless they were full of attractive wimmens between the ages of 18 and 25, massaging me with their lily-soft caress *sigh*
Ha. The drug must be working.

21. really?
Trazodone is the only thing that worked for me. Ambien seemed to have no effect on me. but 100mg of trazodone, and I was sound asleep in 15 minutes.

22. It helped me fall asleep, but the side effects were not worth it.
I'd rather stay awake all night every night than take Traz again.

8. What all do you take?
What's the diagnosis? I think we've talked about this in the past, but it was a long time ago. I have schizoaffective disorder- some symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I take small doses of lithium, benztropine, and Wellbutrin and a large dose of Geodon which is an anti-psychotic. I feel almost completely normal now and I don't suffer from side effects. I'm still a little bummed, but I think that is due to the stress of having just moved and adjusting to living alone.

11. We're playing "medication roulette" right now :-D
I'm not working for the past month and we're adjusting meds. Last week I added Zoloft to the mixture, and cut back on Cymbalta. I also take Lithium and Lamictal for the bipolar stuff. I do the Ambien at night to sleep, and take a blood-pressure med because of the side effects of the Cymbalta. I also take a beta-blocker to offset the Parkinsons-like tremor I get from the Lithium. I also take synthetic testosterone because of a defect in my pituitary gland.

I think that's all the scrips. I also take a stool softener (yay), a multivitamin, and an omega3 fish oil thingy each twice a day. I have utter faith in our modern medical system that everything will eventually be worked out to my satisfaction and I may resume living my normal, uninterrupted life (/sarcasm)

Glad to hear you're doing well, man. Don't let all that moving stress get you down. You sound like you know what you're doing. And that's pretty damn impressive! :toast:

14. Yeah, I kind of got it together now
And I know I'm lucky to feel that way. A lot of folks aren't as fortunate. I know several people who are on public assistance due to mental health problems and there are more who can sort of function, but still have a very hard time. The problem is our health system like you alluded to. Mental health patients need time to adjust and recover, but the insurance companies will only let you have a few days. My insurance company would not cover me past 7 days in the hospital.

16. You nailed it
Thankfully I've got FMLA leave (unpaid) from work or I'd be screwed. I haven't worked a full day since early June and probably won't work another one until some time in August. And even then insurance won't cover all the therapy and ongoing maintenence needed to treat a long-term chronic medical condition.

Funking Barstewards. :grr:

3. Nah, it's cool. I'm an old pro with this shit
I've been on it for 2+ years and have a wikkid-kewl tolerance built up to it. In fact it takes me 1.5 to 2x as much to knock me out as it does other people. I pop 'em like tic tacs, I'm such a badd-asss mofo.

:D

6. I've been taking it for about a year, though not every night.
It often takes longer than the "very quickly" it's supposed to work (like, an hour after I take it), but when it hits, it HITS.

13. I'm taking the CR for precisely that reason
I would take it, be out for four hours, and then be awake at 3:00 am, unrested and totally useless.

THe CR is a bit better that way. But it still creeps up on you. And I'm fairly certain it is addicting. I take it every night or else I don't go to sleep. I forgot to take it Friday and I didn't fall asleep until after 2:00. WHen you're bipolar, one of the things they recommend is that you adhere to a very strict sleep schedule to regulate your moods. If you stray from it (like, stay up all night), you run the rist of triggering a manic or depressive episode.

So, I guess the trade-off is between being addicted to Ambien and having a regular sleep schedule or not having control over my manic and depressive episodes. One's bad, but the other's worse.

Fuck that shit. It don't do much.

I take Lunesta.

Then they give you 100 mg of benadryl and expect you to conk out, and you don't. They look at ya really weirdly then.

Benadryl doesn't make me sleepy.
