Crimes of the 20th Century -- "it's the crime of the century!"
As far as I know, the murder of Stanley White by Harry K. Thaw was the first referred to as the crime of the century.

Then there was the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, also referred to as the crime of the century.

Have any other 20th century crimes been referred to in this manner?

3. Leopold and Loeb
The "Ubermensch." Plead guilty and then defended by Clarence Darrow to get them life sentences as apposed to death. The two boys killed Bobby Franks to prove to themselves that they could. Amazing story. Read "Never The Sinner," a play by John Logan to get a good insight (Logan did 20 years of research before writing the play). It is by far the best play I have ever read and/or performed in.

5. The English Patient
I grant, it just barely made the cut, but it still squeaked in before the century's end.
