So I'm helping my husband proofread a comic graphic novel...
Edited on Wed Jul-25-07 12:09 PM by NewWaveChick1981
...He just got a job proofreading Japanese anime graphic novels for a major publishing house. He's excellent at comic story flow and content, but he's lousy at grammar/syntax/punctuation/spelling. He has enlisted my help for the Grammar Nazi stuff, and I sat down last night to start checking. It's translated into English from Japanese, and the translator did a decent job....except for some literal translations. The characters are all supposed to be cool, hip American teenagers. One character tells the other to "make a kiss with me." How many American English-speaking teenagers are going to tell someone to "make a kiss with me?" In one sequence of panels, the lead character is trying to "diffuse bomb". I think he'd better DEFUSE THE bomb...because that keeps it from exploding. :P I caught a lot of other stuff (spelling, punctuation, spacing, etc.) and had to reword some very stilted dialogue in several places. He's getting a very high hourly rate to do this, so I don't mind helping.

He had to sign a privacy statement saying he wouldn't divulge the plot or story to anyone. Don't worry---the story is so incredibly boring and tedious that neither he nor I will tell a soul. :P

3. I'll have to find out the title.
I didn't see the cover page, just the content pages. It's pretty popular from what I've been told, so I'm sure she's probably heard of it. :) I'll post again when I get home tonight.

5. I could see somet teens saying
"Make a kiss with me" if it was done in a kind of silly way, i.e., they had just seen a poorly subtitled foreign movie that had that line in it. Sort of like how I went to a movie with the woman that would become my future ex-wife, and afterwards we kept asking each other "Do I make you horny?" (the original Austin Powers movie)
