CAT OWNERS: What do you do when someone with allergies comes over.

Rockit's mom is very allergic and she is coming over in a couple of weeks. Any tips to minimize her discomfort will be HIGHLY appreciated.

1. Buy some Claritin-D.

The SO and I use Febreeze with anti-allergens when we clean, because I'm slightly allergic to cats. There may be anti-allergen carpet deodorizer out there somewhere as well.

3. Arm & Hammer

makes a powder that you sprinkle on the carpet 15 min before you vacuum. It helps "release" the pet hairs in the carpet.

6. It is good

I just moved into a house with all hardwood or laminate flooring, so I won't need it anymore.

But in the apartment, I love how after I vacuumed everything smelled "clean."

vacuum and dust everywhere. Brush the cat daily to remove loose hair and throw it away outside. That's about all you can do. There are some people who can't come in my house at all because they are so allergic, and I only have one cat. What they are allergic to is the proteins in the cat's saliva. Because cats lick themselves all the time to keep clean, they get their saliva all over their coat, and their coat is always shedding. There may be no solution if the visitor is highly allergic, other than staying out of the house completely.

get some allergy meds, vacuum well, including upholstry, and if you have a hose on your vac, suck out your vents and/or change filters or whatever (I don't have AC, but I assume like a heater they have filters?). Wash their sheets in hot water and lock the cats out of their room if possible.

If that fails, research some close hotels as backup.

cat every week because her brother is allergic. He can be around the cats without difficulty now and even bought one of his own recently. I can't remember the name........

We do clean but that is a still a lot of pet hair.

Every room has a air cleaner, Target has a good model for around $30, a Holmes.

Also we have table top type water fountains, that helps to clean the air to.

I had a colleague who said she "wasn't too allergic" to cats come to the house once; and even after vacuuming, dusting, and putting the kitties in a separate room, my friend's eyes started swelling and she had to pull out an inhaler.

Unless you have a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, you're going to be raising a lot of dust into the air.

What I did when I had friends over who were allergic was to vacuum the carpet and cushions the day before. I would even go over the chair cushions with a damp rag to get anything that didn't vacuum up. Then just before they arrived, I would take a plant mister and spray around the house. The theory was that it would entrap any floating particles of cat dust that might be floating in the air.

Now I just don't invite anyone over that doesn't like my cat.

A few people have told me that they said they were allergic to cats/dogs because they didn't like them, but didn't want to insult anybody.
