in one day in Milwaukee county and travel times of 68 minutes for a 5 mile drive on the interstate!

I think this one is a local phenom. I can't remember ever seeing so many accidents in January...it is the first storm of the year to happen during the commuting hours as noted below today may be the equivalent of an in-service refresher.

Expensive though...

In my experience, the first good snow storm of the year in Wisconsin, it seems like everyone has forgotten how to drive in snow. A couple of snowstorms later, those who haven't remembered how to drive in snow, usually don't have a working car anymore. The rest of us are fine (and much safer) for the rest of the season.

To be honest, sometimes I'd like to think about adding a 'snow endorsement' to WI licenses (like 'airbrakes' on a truck license, etc...). Most people who grew up here *should* have had the experience of being taken to an empty parking lot, and doing spins until they understand how the car handles in snow. I worry a lot about people coming here from warmer climates who've never had that 'training'. The 'snow endorsement' could solve that problem (although I don't think I'd *really* like it to happen in reality...just griping after dodging traffic today...).

suv drivers thinking that their 5000+pound four wheel drive will stop going 70 miles an hour...hey dumb ass it`s not going to stop. i used to drive a hundred miles a day on the interstate in a honda crx and would smile every time i saw a suv that slid off the road..you get that way when they look down and stare at you because you`re driving alittle car.

When I used to work around Milwaukee, I remember seeing half a dozen truck/SUV/jeep vehicles sitting upside down on their roofs in snowstorms like this. Sometimes, the driver would still be hanging there belted in their seats, upside down, looking somewhat perplexed...

For the Record, Once and For All: Four wheel drive does NOT help you stop.

It's normally a 35-40 minute Interstate drive; 45-50 if I take surface roads. So this wasn't bad, by any stretch of the imagination.
