Question for the golfers in the lounge.
What is a reasonable score for a 15 year old who has been playing for a year? The golf coach here seems to think that shooting in the low 80s is pretty standard.

Is that true? BoyMidlo consistently shoots in the mid 80s, but apparently that isn't good enough.

2. I don't golf, so what do you mean?
Do you mean my son's score is pretty good, or the coach's requirement is pretty good?

7. I used to have a neighbor with a license plate that said
2golf72, so I thought that 85-86 was pretty good for a kid.

He plays a lot here, especially at the driving range down the street and I think he was really looking forward to this.

Hard to see your kid disappointed. But, that's life.

4. That's darn good for someone that's only been playing a year....
Don't they have a JV team? My school had one for hackers like myself.

6. He's only able to take 11 kids because the golf course
can only accomodate that many for tee times.

I thought anything under 90 was pretty good for a kid his age, but now he is really discouraged and doesn't think he'll make the team.

We'll see I guess.

5. It's a great score!
However, it may not be good enough to play golf for the school. The difference might not seem great, but for golf 2, 3,4 strokes is all it takes to seperate the pack..........

8. It sounds like he has some real natural talent -
whether it's good enough to make the school team, however, is completely dependent upon how many other kids he's competing with and how good they are. I happened to start at the same age he did, and was never competitive enough to make my high school team. 29 years later though, I've made serious strides in my level of play, and still maintain a strong passion for it. Even if he can't make the team this year, please encourage him to stay with it if he enjoys it, because it truly is a game for life and he may show some major skills a year or two down the road. There are a few players on tour that didn't make their high school teams!

9. In all honesty, I think a lot of the 'talent' comes from some
tremendous upper body strength that he built last year when he was on crutches for 12 weeks. Golf was essentially the only sport he could play, because his dad could drive him in the cart and when he finally got a walking cast, he was good to go.

He definitely needs to work on his putting, but he seems to enjoy it and I want to encourage him because it seems to be such a life skill. Lots of deals are made on the golf course, or so I'm told.

I could never do it. Trying to get that little ball in the hole would give me a nervous breakdown.

10. The world is full of good golfers.
My son is fifteen, regularly shoots in the low seventies, and is number five on his high school team. The national amateur championship was last weekend-both of those kids in the finals were under sixteen and usually break seventy. Unfortunately, one of them lives about thirty miles from here and is in our district-doubt if we'll be advancing to regionals any time soon. I play to a ten, and am not in the top one-hundred in our club. If golf is important to him, he will need to get better.

11. I've been playing for years and I don't shoot in the 80s.
I don't play often, but still...

Tell the boy to work on his short game and putting. That's what shaves strokes the fastest.

Ask Crenshaw or Roberts. On edit: I forgot Seve Ballesteros who was about as wild as can be. Won quite a few majors.

18. I was hoping you would weigh in.
I want to encourage him, so we're going to get some lessons this week from the pro at the course where the golf team try outs will be held.

He played with his dad and a friend of his dad who is a 'scratch golfer' ? and the friend thought BoyMidlo really had the game down well.

I am wondering if what happened with this team is that there were 11 last year, he can only take 11 this year and he doesn't want to cut anyone from last year.

If that is the case, I wish he would have just said that rather than get some of the kids all pumped to try out.

Suck is life.

14. oh fuck no
assuming this is 18 hoLes and not 9, breaking 100 shouLd be ceLebrated for any age at that Length of pLaying time.

i shot a 73 once (got a trophy for that round), but i now just try to break 90.

16. That's what I thought. And, making things worse
is my husband who has been walking around the house mumbling 'what do I pay this coach for if not to coach?'

I just hate to see him disappointed like this because he has been told by some 'true' golfers that he does very well for his age.

19. Sure it is good-
but it is not competitive for high school golf. Much dedication and hard work are required to play well at that level.

20. That's pretty good for one year playing

But for competitive HS golf it is not so hot, borderline. If the team were bigger or there was a JV team, sure. I started at 12, my best friend and next door neighbor's dad was a frustrated golfer. Tried to qualify for his PGA card but ended up a car salesman. He built a putting green in his back yard. My parents got me a yearly pass at the municipal local course and we'd play 36 every day. By the time I got to HS I was shooting in the low 80's consistently but back then golf was a spring sport and my first love was baseball. All the kids I played with made the golf team.

Good suggestions upthread, work on the short game, that's where all the strokes are. Par on any given hole is figured as the number of shots to get to the green and then add 2 putts. For instance a par 4 you should be on the green in 2 and 2 putt for a par. Therefore on a par 72 course, half the strokes are putts in theory.

If he doesn't make the team, he could ask the coach if he could be team manager or scorekeeper or help in some way. That way he can hang with them, learn the ropes, maybe get some practice and instruction, keep his name in the coach's mind for next year and ya never know, one of the 11 could get hurt, get bad grades, move, etc. At 15 he is either a frosh or sophomore, he has another 2 or 3 years to go.
