Speaking of Neil Young, I'm new to him but I like what I hear. Recommend some stuff of his.

1. The albums you need:
1960s
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

1970s
After the Gold Rush (mandatory)
Harvest (also mandatory)
Long May You Run (for the title song if nothing else)
Comes a Time
Rust Never Sleeps

1980s
Freedom ("Rockin' in the Free World!" :headbang: Also, "Too Far Gone" may be his most underrated song)
Ragged Glory

1990s
Harvest Moon

2000s
Living With War (one of the best anti-war albums to come out of the Iraq War)

4. My absolute favourite Neil record is...
On The Beach. It's amazing! And I don't want to speak ill of Mr. Stepping Razor's list, but any Neil Young list without Tonight's The Night on it is, surely to biscuits, a weird list. (But even though On The Beach is my own fave, I wouldn't say the same about omitting it from a list. It's a personal taste thing. But Tonight's The Night transcends personal taste to be the de facto objective must-listen Neil Young album.)

5. J'Accuse!
Tonight's the Night? I mean, sure, I'd be open to the possibility that it should've been included on the list, but it's no After the Gold Rush. I mean, isn't that one generally accepted as his masterpiece?

6. seriously, don't post drunk
"Tonight's The Night transcends personal taste to be the de facto objective must-listen Neil Young album."

Tonight's the Night is allright, but the de facto objective must-listen? Negative, ghost rider, the pattern is full.

The de-facto objective must-listen is After the Gold Rush.

7. "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=kVyEba8xov0

Out of the blue
and into the black
They give you this,
but you pay for that
And once you're gone,
you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.

10. Decade
From Amazon.com
The first stop for anybody new to Neil Young's music, this 34-song set (originally released in 1977) traces his growth from Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to Crazy Horse to his Harvest band, the Stray Gators. The album defined Young to rock radio the way Hot Rocks determined which Rolling Stones songs would become classics, but this is more than a quickie greatest-hits collection. Rarities and hits--Springfield's "Mr. Soul," CSNY's "Ohio," and Young's "Cinnamon Girl," "Heart of Gold," and the closing "Long May You Run"--develop in thematic and chronological patterns. --Steve Knopper

and I love the new album - Live at Massey Hall

11. The eight minute version of Almost Cut My Hair on a CSNY box set
Everything you ever needed to know about grunge guitar is on that blistering track.
Crosby does the vocals but Young's the guitarist. (I think)

12. I was named after him.
Oddly enough, right?

Anyway, the album that I think best encapsulates him is "Live Rust." Half-acoustic, half-electric. The acoustic stuff is great, but the electric stuff in completely awesome.

Favorite non-live album: Zuma

Others:
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After the Gold Rush
Tonight's The Night
On The Beach
Time Fades Away (you can't find this one on CD, even though includes two of my favorite songs, the title track and "L.A.")
Ragged Glory
Mirror Ball
Dead Man (not everyone's cup of tea)

15. If you can only get one, get "Decade" because
it's a 3-disc retrospective (at least it's 3 vinyl discs, I don't know about the CDs) of the most fertile period of his career, roughly 1966 through 1976, and the liner notes, written by Neil himself are illuminating. Almost all of his best songs are on it, in my opinion.

other favorites:
"On The Beach"
"Tonight's The Night"
"Rust Never Sleeps"
"Live Rust"
"Zuma"

16. Tonight's The Night
The entire album.

Play it late at night, light a few candles, have some of your favorite hard liquor nearby, and your preferred method of smoke...

It's still the most direct, raw, painful, cathartic song cycle he has ever done.

Other favorite albums include:

"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"

"Rust Never Sleeps"

"Freedom"

"Mirrorball" (with Pearl Jam)

"Zuma"

"Ragged Glory"

Took you long enough. ;-)

Many songs individually referenced above are done within this magnificent cd. It's my single favorite Neil Young work.

25. You sure that record's not called 'Live Rust'? I have never
heard of Diamonds and Rust other than as a Joan Baez and Judas Priest song. 'Live Rust' is a good call either way!

Neil frustrates me as an artist. Lots of great, and terrible stuff.

26. You're right.
Diamonds And Dust is what was in my fried brain- it's my favorite Tangerine Dream song. Live Rust is what I meant to say.

My brain has been doing that middle-aged thang a lot lately...

Hi,
Not a huge fan, but the Greendale album has totally changed my mind. A story album, I thought it was great and the live in Amsterdam version is amazing.

Peace

23. Neil Young - Heart Of Gold
Live from 1971. Neil digs around in his pockets trying to find the right harp
and then plays a new song...

Heart of Gold.

Heart of Gold

I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind, its such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.
