...the stock answer is that there are other places for liberal vs. conservative debates.

Couple years ago Salon's "Table Talk" was a discussion forum largely populated by Liberals, and it had an open policy. Trouble was, as one of the largest explicitly-Liberal themed forums, it attracted conservative trolls, who essentially destroyed the place. Same thing would happen here if we had an open policy especially since Rush and others like to attack us every few weeks.

"Free Republic" is just as exclusive, and I don't begrudge them that. For some forums, it's the only policy that works.

44. We're not about liberals bating conservatives.
This is OUR site. Meaning that we discuss issues that relate to us and how we feel about those issues. These boards are not set up to facillitate shouting fests between Republicans and Democrats. It's one thing to be middle of the road, it's another to be a Bush supporter on this board. We aren't Bush supporters here, not a goddamn one of us. If you want to be among your own kind, go to Free Republic. This is our site.

I have been warned and will only answer questions or help others with problems in my area of expertise. I'll leave B... out of it. Thanks.

I'm not here to debate, I was only trying to understand the board a little better. I figured it out pretty damn quick.

54. you know
we do have a few republicans in our midst... they understand the rules of the board and treat us with respect rather than baiting - they stay away from the rightwing talking points and presumptions and sort of treat being here like being a guest... much as most of us would do were we to ask to be welcomed among a committed conservative group that had their own guidelines... and they are valued members of the community (calling prodigaljunkmail ... ) It can happen... just not very common.

There are plenty of left / right discussion forums, perhaps you could go there.
Did you know that there are many survivers / victims of 9-11-01 that oppose what Bush has been doing?
Did you lose anyone in 9-11? Our local obits are about even regarding the count of local dead from 9-11 and local dead in Iraq.

Illinois = F.I.Bs :evilgrin:
they're also 'flatlanders', perhaps more commonly.

Michigan = 'Michiganders' which sounds like they should be geese or something...
Minnesota = "Minnesot'ns" according to Garrison Keillor

Going up to Canada I've heard of Quebeckers and Newfies, but I'm unaware of any other provinces' appellations

26. Well... the "I" stands for Illinois...
...but you really don't hear this term very much these days. 20 years ago there seemed to be a lot more hate goin' on back and forth between Illinois and Wisconsin, but it seems to have died down quite a bit. We *all* drive like jerks these days, for one thing. "Cheesehead" used to be an insult when directed at a Wisconsinite by an Illinoisan but we've appropriated the term for our own use.

I gotta say, though, that we look really stupid with styrofoam cheese wedges on our heads.

They are getting very, very old. I'm sure Texans are as tired of being called bushbabies as we Californians (residents and native ex-pats alike) are tired of having the name of our state misspelled and drawn out comically in lousy Austrian accents.

114. sometimes stupid jokes are what we need
to lighten the mood. Some of us use poking fun at ourselves (as I did with the Hoosier background... its an insult used as an insult of the nth degree in St. Louis)... as a way of alleviating tension in times that are all too tense. I lived in California for five years and loved it... chaotic politics and all (talk about split personality voters - crazy ballot initiatives pass... but the politicians who push them get defeated). Yet through all that time (tech boom) my area (the penninsula of the Bay Area) was the butt of a ton of jokes... it was part of the territory. It in noway detracted from the dynamic experience of living there.

Here in Champaign, everything is "Illini". The Illini were actually a Native American tribe who lived around here. I think we're "Illinoisans" pronounced "Ill-ee-noy-ans". I'm not entirely sure, though.
