Name me a nice coastal town with a reasonable cost of living...
Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 07:06 PM by fujiyama
I just went on vacation to CA. I loved it there. And I remembered how much I also love being near the ocean. I live in MI, and I suppose I could find a place near a lake (we are the great lakes state after all), but the economy here is tanking and I want a change of scenery anyways.

So name me a nice place on the coast...I also prefer relatively liberal places. I think the West Coast would suit me...But as much as I loved CA, it was so damned expensive. Granted, I'd have to find a job in whatever place it is, but hell...it's nice to dream isn't it?!

1. We live outside of Santa Cruz and trust me, it's not reasonable...sadly
the real estate prices here are insane...thank gawd we bought when we did. The good news is, Santa Cruz is about as liberal and progressive as you can get. It's beautiful here.

:hi: Glad you had a nice vacay!

2. Santa Cruz is nice! I visted there a few years ago!
I absolutely loved the Bay Area (I was there recently but didn't go to SC this time) and would move there in a heartbeat, but it's insanely expensive as you said.

3. I know of some inexpensive places on the lake in Ohio and Wisconsin
These places probably wouldn't be enough of a change of scenery for you though.

5. Oregon isn't as expensive as CA, it might be worth looking into.
But it's definitely not like California, for better and for worse.

6. All of our coastal town are based on tourism...
I wouldn't expect to easily find a good paying job in any of the towns that litter the coast. Obviously you can survive slinging chowder at Mo's in Florence. If that is what you want.

9. plus the fact that coastal residents aren't particularly liberal
Outside Portland and Eugene, most of Oregon is fairly conservative. And some working class communities are very conservative.

Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 08:06 PM by alarimer
If you don't mind the threat of hurricanes. Corpus Christi/Port Aransas/Rockport (TX) are still fairly reasonable but you'd better move quickly. Also it is really hot here. LOL. But definitely better in the winter than MI. Texas is a pretty red state but this area isn't as bad as some parts.

Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 11:30 PM by fujiyama
A bit cold though (and I'm disappointed the cost of living is kinda on the upside)...Granted, I'm used to MI winters, but at the same time...as pretty as things look covered in snow, I'd be willing to give them up for more reasonable winters...

14. Well, it's all relative really, and if you are already used to what we have here
in weather and loving costs, it wouldn't be such a bad change. The real question is if there is enough work. I haear the city of Porland is growing down in that area.

a liberal oasis surrounded by redneck heaven, but beautiful beaches are everywhere, the weather is usually great and prices are not too bad.

Highly recommended.

23. I had to move from there because it was too expensive and there weren't enough jobs
It is very, very nice -- just remember the hurricanes.

And, I would never call Wilmington liberal. I would say it is an odd mix of liberals, film people, tourists, and mega Freepers.

Lots of great coastal towns in Oregon. Newport, Florence, Brookings etc are all pretty reasonable. Not too crowded and pretty liberal. Oregon has a kind of rural feel.

Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 10:38 AM by bob_weaver
Not all that liberal though, since it's right next to Camp Pendleton. Even so, it's rather blasé with a lot of diversity, nothing like the bible belt.
