Ugh...CHIGGERS!

I slathered anti-chigger junk all over myself before my hike through the deep woods the other day, and only had 4 bites. But I forgot to wash my sneakers. So the next day, about 40 of them got me. I'm going to kill them with alcohol, because according to an old wives tale, chiggers can't be boozers.

Dear god, the itching is maddening.

2. I had never heard of chiggers until 1991
Then I went to basic training at Ft. Benning and we became way too well accquainted.

3. We used to cover them with clear nail polish
If you haven't scratched them open yet, that is...

I remember (it's been years) that it helped a lot.

16. Also used clear nail polish - suspect it killed them because it hardened and cut off air

5. If you can tolerate Benadryl it will help with the itching. I only use
it as a last resort because it dings me out so bad that I can barely stay awake. Forget the alcohol, the chigger is already gone by the time it starts to itch and all you will accomplish is setting yourself on fire. Some more good info and advice can be found here:

13. LOL! You didn't specify which type of alcohol you were planning
to use. A "liberal application" might do you some good.

14. Only three?
Three chigger bites is a walk in the park. I have about 100 now. Sleep is almost impossible.

I think I keep getting more every time I wear my shoes. I just toasted my shoes in the oven at 150. Now they're in the freezer. DIE LITTLE BASTARDS!!!

8. Twice a day take a bath as hot as you can stand
Trust me, it works. Last year, I had hundreds and hundreds of bites from the waist down, over 200 on one leg alone.

10. We called them red bugs growing up. My grandmother used butter and salt...
Of course the salt is what worked.

12. Hike much?
Anyone who spends any time hiking should be familiar with them. There are three insects that are a hikers bane...ticks, mosquitoes, and chiggers. Nasty little things.

15. You have my sympathy...
 I HATE chiggers---I had my first bout with them when I was a kid and picked blackberries at my grandmother's farm. I have NEVER had the insane itching with any other pest---mosquitos included. :yoiks: I have run into them a few more times, but I had insect repellent from head to toe and only got one or two. :pals: Definitely try the alcohol thing. :P It couldn't hurt.
