I'll tell you a SECRET! I HATED the movie "The Bourne Ultimatum"... Did YOU like it?
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 08:13 AM by Radio_Lady
My husband convinced me to go and see it.

It left me with a big headache. All action, all moving camera, all the time. I'm giving it a "D" on Ellen's Entertainment Report Card.

Definitely a "DICK" flick -- and it raked in the bucks last weekend and probably this weekend, too.

http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt0440963/

The only great thing about it was the San Francisco AMC Theater we got to see it in -- at 1000 Van Ness, a former Cadillac dealership building. Big lobby with lots of photos -- and a grand staircase!

Here's the history:

Opened in the summer of 1998, the AMC 1000 Theater is one of the City's newer first-run feature multiplexes. This is a crowded, well-lit neighborhood of movie theaters and furniture stores still known as Auto Row despite the fact that many of the car dealerships have long since departed. The AMC 1000 occupies the old Don Lee Cadillac Agency. The lobby is as large as the opera, and you are escalator-ed up many floors to screening rooms, each level with its own snack counter. The theater has SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital Sound), plus THX and Dolby Digital Stereo.

Sincerely,

Radio Lady

Which film is a "Chick" flick, and which film is a "Dick" flick?

All that information is at www.us.imdb.com and is updated daily so you can track it yourself.

For your information, I also hated Clint Eastwood's "The Unforgiven" as being anti-female and very violent. The movie went on to win an Academy Award!!!! I spit out my popcorn for that choice!

Sincerely,

They do show:

Men age 45+

Women age 45+

My suggestion is adding:

Men age 65+

Women age 65+

Unequivocally, my sex and age group is NOT the target audience of this particular movie!

6. I agree.
Matt Daimon wasn't wearing any tight tank tops. He was hidden in mostly baggy clothes. So there wasn't nearly as much eyecandy to watch.

The constantly moving camera, especially during the fast scenes, was giving me a headache.

It had a lot of good action in it, but not a whole lot of substance between action scenes.

It was a decent movie, but I wouldn't give it more than a C.

14. exactly -- I really have liked the Bourne movies but
thought this one was the weakest, even though everyone else seems wowed by all the fast zoomy things. You summed it up quite well, ThomCat -- lots of good action, but not as much substance as I would have liked. The 'quiet' scenes in this third installment weren't nearly as interesting as the conversation/quiet scenes in the first two.

I was disappointed - the first two movies stayed with me for a while, this one vanished as soon as I left the theater.

I think the supporting cast wasn't as powerful, either -- while David Straithern is usually fantastic, he somehow didn't even come close to Brian Cox or Chris Cooper. Albert Finney stays with a person, but Scott Glen in this one was superfluous.

Men and women younger than myself have enjoyed this movie. No problem.

My husband and I went to a screening in San Rafael of a European/Belgian/French movie on Saturday, August 4th. It was part of a film festival. The movie is not in broad release, but the English title is "Gorgeous." It was a sharp comedy about four women and their romps through single life, marriage, divorce, children, etc. I loved it, but my husband slept through almost the whole thing. My elderly aunt disliked it intensely, but I thought it was kind of cute.

So, after that debacle, I told him I'd go see an action movie with him to make up for the "CHICK" flick...

That's the genesis of this whole thing. It was not meant to disparage anyone named Dick or anyone WITH or WITHOUT that appendage. I just got carried away by the rhythm and the rhyme...

16. It was OK. The hand-held camera direction made me have a headache, too
I've been a big fan of the books by Ludlum and so I have been following the movies....which, not surprisingly, are NOTHING like the books. I'm still working my way through the Bourne Ultimatum book and it's completely different from the movie. In the book, he's married, has kids and the name of the group isn't Blackbriar it's Medusa. And that's just to start with!

Anyway, I agree the movie is a major testosterone treat for the guys. Of course, MrShine loved it. :D

There were some interesting and scary scenes of gov't survellience which I'm sure exist today, too. The final scenes he had with Albert Finney were good, where the morally-corrupt Finney was looking so bloated and ugly...I think that made a statement about the organization he'd affiliated himself with.

31. Well, perhaps it's more a young man's movie, but this movie seems to be universally appreciated.
Edited on Sat Aug-11-07 09:41 PM by Radio_Lady
However, the women of a certain age who rated it at www.us.imdb.com -- 45+ years of age -- tended to give it the lowest numerical grades. I gave it a 3 out of 10.

Perhaps I'll see it again, but not without a dose of Dramamine. Maybe it will be better on a small TV screen.

In school, we were taught that film is a very DYNAMIC medium -- and unless you hold a shot still for AT LEAST a certain number of frames, you could create real nausea and disorientation in the audience. While shooting our short films for final school credit, we would fight for a tripod to hold the 16mm. camera steady for this reason.

35mm. film gave way to 70mm., and now small digital hand-held cameras don't require a tripod! Directors like Paul Greengrass are making the rules over, or so they like to think.

Sorry, but I don't agree with the way he and his camera people shot this film. I was truly exhausted by his wavy, floaty camera positioning, if that's what you want to call it. Totally self-conscious and positively sickening. I can't imagine how they even edited it.

Sincerely,

Radio Lady in Oregon

When did you go?

The 1000 Van Ness is our favorite theater...comfy seats and usually no crowds, although that has been changing a bit lately. (I was worried for a while that they would close because it was always so empty.) I love the building, and remember it as a car dealership.

As for TBU, I didn't hate it, but I find I can hardly remember it already, which doesn't speak highly of it. The camera work was a tad annoying, yes. In general, though, I enjoy both "chick flicks" and "dick flicks."

I think there were about six or eight people in the theater. Sorry we missed you!

Yes, the car dealership pictures on the walls were wonderful! That wooden double staircase is also remarkable.
However, they should do something unique with the lobby -- it's massive and with no furniture -- it looks quite bare!

My husband got some pictures of the art deco image on the front of the building -- two male figures high above the doorway. They looked like the same period as those at 30 Rockefeller Center, in New York City, where I worked in the 1960s.

Sincerely,

Radio Lady in Oregon

37. Half of the lobby used to be a restaurant/bar called Venture Frogs
It sprang up in the dotcom boom and disappeared in its wake. Ever since, that area has been empty. I don't know why they don't do something with it. It was a nice place to go after a movie to sit and chat over drinks and a bowl of warm edamame.

41. Interesting information. Maybe another entrepreneur will rent the space.
Restaurants in theaters are sprouting up (!) here in Portland. We have a couple of theater/restaurants that have launched just in the last year or two around here.

However, my son works as a Chili's restaurant manager in Salt Lake City, and we have all noticed how much risk there is in operating these facilities, even the chains.

but i agree with you, it is a dick flick (got your nifty description w/o being told, btw).

The camera angles and jerkiness gave me a slight headache and I caught many errors in the script, such as Bourne would not have telegraphed his location so many times; many of the falls he walked away from would have broken bones in the best conditioned person; and Julia Stiles' character--being a trained agent--would have gone for the eyes with her hands instead of the assassin's mouth, etc. etc.

The line i liked best was near the last when one of the CIA hit men had Jason Bourne right in front of him in his gun sight and Bourne said, "do you even know why you're suppose to kill me?"

"Do you even know why you're suppose to kill me?" If every armed person in the entire world would ask themselves if they know the real answer/the true answer to that question, we'd have less assassinations/ less wars.
That line is similar to Renee Zellweger's character's statement in Cold Mountain: "Wars are fought for a flag and a lie."

Acting was superb. I love Matt Damon and thought he did an excellent job, as did all of the cast.

This movie reflects what could be/can/is wrong with our present govt. Other than a little too much action and a no. of script flaws, all and all I thought it was a good movie.

A female opinion, btw. :)

54. Radio Lady
You're a very smart gal and you've a right to your preferences and opinions. :)

I admit that I closed my eyes for a few seconds in some of the actions scenes because I could take it any more, but the plot was interesting enough to hold my attention and the message was a good one: our government can be and is dangerously corrupted....and the American people are in the dark.

And,btw, I love your 'dick flick' catagory. I'm going to use the term now, thanks to you.

Sincerely,
Duppers

52. Me too!
The theatre was packed, so I ended up in the second row. I literally got sick to my stomach. At first I didn't associate it with the camera movement. Just thought I had eaten something I shouldn't have. But in time, I realized it got worse during those scenes, and lessened in between. And I had a splitting headache by the time it was over.

Why would they think nausea-inducing camera work is entertaining?

56. Good question: "Why would they think nausea-inducing camera work is entertaining? "
My husband thinks it added to the action. I disagree totally.

Sorry the movie made you ill.

58. I thought it was great!
The shaky camera is a filmaking style of the director Paul Greengrass. I think it lends itself very well the the "fly on the wall" feeling I had as a viewer. It felt urgent, like you were running along side Jason Bourne. I always found the Bourne movies to be a-typical action flicks, that I as a woman, greatly enjoyed.
They are much more intelligent than your average "Die Hard" movie.

A+ from me.

61. You've got your opinion, and I've got mine.
That's what makes film criticism so interesting.

62. ...
I think I yelled at the screen (softly) at least a few times:

Would SOMEONE PLEASE HOLD THAT CAMERA STEADY so I can watch this scene?

Good thing I wore a baseball cap with a brim. That helped me rest my eyes more than once.

Thanks for posting.

65. We saw it on Saturday night
at a drive-in (yes, they still exist!). My friend thoroughly enjoyed it, while I think I would have enjoyed it more without the handheld cameras. That was a major turnoff for me with Blair Witch (which I despised and got sick from watching it), and I don't care for that style. It seemed to me that there was very little in terms of plot, though, and think that it was significantly padded.

On the other hand, I like Matt Damon and David Strathairn, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. :)

67. Hated the first two.
It was like James Bond without James Bond, weird villains, cool gadgets, vampy women, or camp.

In other words, like James Bond but no good.
