Our Apache died last night
18 years ago my wife brought a calico cat home for adoption. She was the first cat I had ever adopted. She turned into a beautiful and very intelligent cat. Through the years she was the boss of all our pets. She would wake my wife up each mourning. She became my wifes favorite as time went on. Two years ago she went on thyroid medication. She would remind my wife each mourning and night when it was time to take her pill. She always slept with us. She had a particular walk. Her paws would cross and walk in the same pattern. She was a very proud cat. Four weeks ago she developed a cough. At first the vet thought it was kennel cough. The cough went away slightly but she begain to choke when eating or drinking. She began to sleep behind the couch and wasn't herself. She ended up having fluid in her chest cavity. It eventually got worse and was probably cancer. She had a very violent choking spell saturday night. It was one of the worst times in our life. We held her and sat with her. Three long hours later she passed away in her sleep. She was a great friend and companion and will be greatly missed. Losing a furry friend really tears on your heart. But I would never want to be without a furry friend. Just had to let this out to help with the grief.

4. for apache --
Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
--Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"

Eternal Spirit, we bring you our grief in the loss of Apaache and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for Apache who lived among us and gave us freely of her love. We commit our friend and companion Apache into your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen

God of the universe, be present with this your creature. Bless Apache and BobMorr and his wife who cares for her, now and always. Amen.

10. I"m so sorry
they really are such good friends to us. If only we could be mad at them so it won't hurt so much, but no - they make us better people on top of everything else they do.
She was lucky to have you for so long - 18 is a remarkable age.
Apache is a wonderful name for a beautiful girl!
Peace to you.

15. She reminds me of my first "grown-up" cat...
My family had a cat when I was a little kid, but Sonya was the first cat I had as an adult. She didn't have quite as many distinct patches, with some fur mixed black/orange, but still very similar-looking.

Sonya was a sweet "mom-cat" who was undeniably boss of the house, but would still notice when anyone was feeling sad and go over and purr at them until they felt better. Sadly, she fell ill and died of a mysterious disease (we now think it may have been an early case of FIV, which hadn't been diagnosed yet) when she was quite young -- not even ten years old.

It sounds like Apache was just as precious to you as Sonya was to me.

16. I'm so sorry.
I lost my beloved cat in December. Still have her food dish out as a tribute. She was 18 too! My heart is breaking for you. But Apache has peace now, and she will live on in your heart forever.
