The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poem Thread, 8/13/07

"Season for Bearing"

I used to hold my breath
ten counts—wish I may,
wish I might—then will

my release to that first star
or dandelion sphere—
full moon bursting.

Once I tossed a penny
into a lilly pond,
watched it spiral down

and leave a wake of widening o's...
my cervix dilating too soon.
The doctor's voice bears down

through the receiver:
it makes no difference
if I stay in bed or not,

it makes no difference
if I slow my breaths,
it makes no difference

if I sip green tea,
or cross my legs,
or stand on my head.

I let the cord unwind
as constellations gather
to fill the hollows

in late summer's sky:
Cassiopeia mounts her throne,
Andromeda rises.
