Those of you in helping professions
Counseling, etc...are you required to be in supervision? I've begun to think that this is what I need. A safe place to talk about my work and my feelings about it, and maybe get some advice. But my job neither requires this, nor makes any provisions for it--though I think it should. I don't think I need therapy (feel free to disagree) so much as I need a safe place to share feelings, etc.

So, I'm trying to figure out what to do to meet this need. Do others feel this way?

1. Although it was
never required of me (social worker), it has always been made available and I have taken advantage of it. We see so much, and can say so little, we must have someplace to dump. Dump our own stuff and our job "stuff". The good news is, if you follow your instincts, you will figure it out. Good luck.

2. In Iowa, there was this pastoral counselor in the area

who would see clergy for free. I started seeing him during a period of depression, but after a while I went for someone to reflect on my work with. I didn't agree with some of his therapeutic philosophy, but I would just let that roll off me, and keep talking.

I've realized that I have no one here like that, and that I've come dangerously close to sharing inappropriately with parishioners. Mostly, because I need someone to talk to. You're right, we have to have someplace to dump.

I need to find someone like that. In the meantime, thanks so much for the hug. I need that, too!

3. No I'm No Longer Required
although I was until I was independently licensed.

I work with a team and while I supervise others, I also do not work alone in my own best thinking :P

I think it is helpful to have a place to discuss when you/me are stuck working with a client or just stuck. Countertransference exists and we bring our own issues to the table whenever we work with someone who has their own issues. So it is important that we have some kind of backdrop to address our issues when we are stuck.

JMO,

:pals:

hang in the critters, I read your other thread.
