Your suggestions, please, for colleges for our grandson. Where are the good MEDIA ARTS programs?
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 12:00 AM by Radio_Lady
My grandson just graduated high school in Boston. We've invited him out here to visit in September. He's going to take a year off, but then plans to find a school which will allow him to major in MEDIA ARTS.

One school we have located is Eastern Oregon University, in La Grande, Oregon, out to the east of Portland.

http://www.eou.edu/ma/programs.html

Grandpa has asked me to come up with a more complete list of schools that have so-called media arts programs -- which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

FILM STUDIES AND MUSIC AESTHETICS
DIGITAL MEDIA AND CONTENT FOR NEW MEDIA APPLICATIONS
VISUAL COMPOSITION
NEWSPAPER AND TV JOURNALISM
ADVERTISING AND WEB DESIGN

Anything you can add to this thread will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Radio Lady in Oregon

4. Yes, although in re-reading your post, you should look for film schools..
Calarts has lots of music and arts but I'm not aware if they have some of the media production stuff you mentioned.

It may be a bit avante-garde for him...

Best luck, there should be plenty of things to choose from..

5. Yes, I went there, too -- in 1959-1960. The Theatre Arts Department was superb, but
this young man will have to work to pay for school.

I lived at a woman's boarding house and worked for room and board. I don't remember what the tuition was, but I had to return to Florida in 1960 and then finally finished my college career at the University of Miami in 1962.

Wonder how expensive UCLA would be for an out-of-stater in these more modern times?

And how competitive?

community college in order to qualify for in-state tuition, and bring up his grade point average. He was a New Yorker and his parents were immigrants to this country, so he had to make it largely on his own finances.

All in all, I remember UCLA fondly, but had so many other competing issues in my life at that time that I didn't get the most out of it.

Thanks for posting, Richardo. I do enjoy reading your responses!

Savannah College of Art and Design. I've provided a link to their cinema studies but they have programs in all arts areas, just link back to their home page and look at the course list.

With parents in Boston, Massachusetts and grandparents in Portland, Oregon -- I have no idea where this young man will end up! But we'll try to help him out, wherever he goes.

Austin is a very liberal town with beautiful scenery and plenty of bars. :)

12. Great suggestion! We almost moved to Austin in the 1980s, when my husband
was interviewed for a semi-conductor company.

The job went to someone else, but we have been back at least twice in the past decades. We usually end up staying in San Antonio, and then driving to Austin.

Thanks for the link and the suggestions, both of you!

Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 12:47 AM by deadparrot
Obviously, I can't attest to the quality of these programs, but just playing around with a search engine will generate a ton of results:

University of Arizona: http://web.cfa.arizona.edu/mediaarts/students/degrees-undergrad.php

Temple University: http://www.temple.edu/fma/undergraduate/index.htm

James Madison University: http://smad.jmu.edu/

California College of the Arts: http://www.cca.edu/academics/mediaarts/

University of Montana: http://www.sfa.umt.edu/mart/home.html

Drexel University: http://www.drexel.edu/westphal/

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute: http://www.emac.rpi.edu/

Southern Illinois University--Carbondale: http://mcma.siu.edu/inner.php?pageID=202

ETA: At several sites, including CollegeView (below), you can find specific majors and then search for colleges that have them. Just type in "Media Studies," "Media," or a related search into the engine, click "Go," and results should pop up. Select the ones you want, and click "Add" to put them into a separate list. Click "Search Now," and a number of colleges should pop up. When I tried it, there were lots, but it certainly narrows down the field from the 2000+ colleges and universities in the United States. Plus, it allows him to pick from a wide range of schools in terms of geography, school/class size, extracurriculars, etc.

I think my husband wants me to concentrate on schools in Oregon and maybe Washington state.

But it's good to have all this information coalesced into one thread. I do appreciate your searches.

20. UCLA, NYU, and Columbia are the ones that come to mind first
Though I'm sure there have to be shitloads of excellent small private colleges as well, if he isn't in gigantic schools with tens of thousands of students, such as the Art Institute of New York, New York Film Academy, and The International Film Institute of New York.

One can also look at Sarah Lawrence, St. Mary's in Winona MN, and Bard College, all of which are bloody excellent schools (and Sarah Lawrence and Bard have the advantage of non-rigid degree structures, leaving class choice almost entirely up to the student, creating a truly individually tailored program).

28. Rabrrrrrr, we'll have to discuss these with him. Not sure he wants a BIG or small school.
A lot will have to include what financial help he can get.

His biological mother earns a bunch of money, and I guess his stepmother must do pretty well, too.

His father is "retired" at 48 years of age with bipolar disease, and has just qualified for Social Security disability payments.

I don't know how a school will look at parental income in those circumstances.

31. He'd Do Better to Major In Fine Arts or Economics
And take media arts classes on the side.

Just about everything on your list above is basically high-tech vocational training that will help him get an entry-level job, make a decent living, as long as he wants to remain doing those things and not going into much else.

Meanwhile, unless he is self-employed for life, his managers will be graduates from the business program. Neat how that works, isn't it? You spend the same amount of money on tuition as they do, yet they have the capacity to make 2x, 4x, 10x your salary.

36. USC School of Cinematic Arts
It's one of the best schools in the US for this field of study but is also the most competitive.

From Wikipedia:

"The program is one of USC's most competitive specialty schools, for both undergraduate and graduate programs. The BA program in film production accepts 50 students per year, while the Critical Studies department accepts 75 for its BA program, 20-25 for its MA program, and 10-12 for the Ph.D.; the BFA program in Writing for Film and Television accepts only 24 students per year. The MFA program in film directing accepts 48 new students each year and the MFA for screenwriting accepts 32 students."
