"Oscar" episode 1 " The Phantom Mammal " has passed
A Great Thread has past into DU history & become Archived.

Yes it is the beloved saga titled
" I inherited a mixed animal from Uncle living in woods."

moof will now read this epic journey & catch up on what all the fun was about.
You could tell without ever clicking the thread that it was something special.
This was a thread that had " The Right Stuff " and nothing could stop it.

So it was a great first installment & the saga continues in this sad time of change
as this wonderful work of art disappears over the horizon and sinks into the abyss beyond the dreaded page 20, to be missed and remembered.

" Oscar " .... we salute you,
may you forever live in DU disinfamy and lore.

1. that thread should be compiled into a book
it's, by far, the funniest thing I've ever read online... EVER. I made staunch Oscarites out of Mrs. McLargehuge and my mom-in-law. I can only imagine what that thing would look like on the shelves at my local bookstore... How I would hear guffaws of laughter emanting from the cafe where enraptured readers struggled to make sense out of increasingly illogical descriptions...

Oh man, I'm laughing just THINKING about the thread.

2. Congratulations to all the DUers that helped make " Oscar "
a success. A great concept and nice team work.

Thanks to you all.

If anyone has the software that allows for the duplication of the entire thread along with the links & images, moof will set up a web site for the Oscar thread to be mirrored at. That is assuming it is ok and does not break any DU rules regulations and such.

Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 11:20 PM by Pobeka
By the way you do know of the missing briefcase, and the Tao of Oscar?

On Edit: I'll wait for the thumbs up from the DU admins before I get that thread downloaded.

additional episode ends.

On edit, it was hoped that the approval of the powers at DU being necessary on this project was made clear in the previous reply.

On the site, the moof hut has a website with this place and there are no popups and it works really well.

What moof is proposing is that a website will be set up just for mirroring Oscar stuff. Not having a lot of technical knowledge with the mechanics of computers let alone websites it would be hopeful that once the site was set up the Oscar thread could be " Pasted in as a single thread " To remain viable the site would only require one post every month even tho the site limit is a few 1000 messages before the oldest start automatically. any threads that are " Stuck " are exempt from the axe.

so in short.

The site is free with no popups.
moof has no interest in doing anything with the site after it is set up other than make a place to mirror the Oscar and related Oscar threads from DU.
If someone or group of someones wants to use it as something more after it is established moof would be more than happy to turn over the
" ownership " of the site to this group. Again assuming the DU powers give the OK.

7. What I can give you easily.
A zip file, which you would unzip. It would be the entire inherited animal thread, as if you did a "view all", with all the images.

8. the idea was to insure Oscar was cloned
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 12:12 AM by moof
at a place to call it's own so that should something severe happen the contents of the thread could be retrieved by anyone wanting to
read the thread again or access some story from it.

moof could allow the thread to be deposited at the moof hut for safe keeping but no one would ever be able to access it there as no one knows where it is & moof actively tries to keep it that way.

10. Um, I'm confused now.
In the post that started this, you said you wanted to mirror the Oscar thread, which implies having it accessible via the WWW.

Now it sounds like you really just want a local copy for your own, as a backup?

No problem either way. I can do. I just need the official approval of the site admins.

14. clarification
In the post that started this, you said you wanted to mirror the
Oscar thread, which implies having it accessible via the WWW.

Correct moof is willing and able to set up a website that is free of charge, free of popups and is easy to access view & from the feedback that appears at the help forum for the webmasters at this server.

They no longer are accepting new applications for the free websites but as an existing webmaster there moof is entitled to have another website set up at moof's request.

If this is something that a quorm of people at DU would like to have happen moof is willing to do a small part in makeing it happen by providing a place that would in the end become " Oscar's", sort of like that tree that owns itself.

Now it sounds like you really just want a local copy for your own,
as a backup?

No this is a competely charitable contribution. moof already has a copy of the text of many DU threads including the Phantom Mammal on the moof hut harddrive. But as with many places that moof thought were permanant in the past, many have disappeared and with the the orginal thread. Call moof sentimental but without all the images and links the feel for the atmosphere is lacking. moof was involved in another fantastic thread at another site that was lost due to the sites aditude that it was " just one thread of many " and moof and many others have lamented the loss of that content to this day.

No problem either way. I can do.
I just need the official approval of the site admins.

Same here, since the Admins. might wish to see what they are signing off on should they deem the effort worth any of their time at all which moof fully understands, moof will go ahead and make the request at moof's end to have a new website created in hopes that after seeing that it will be no more than a place for Oscar & the sequels that it will get the blessings of or at less apathy of the admins. to proceed.
This will also afford the Oscarites to see if the accomadations are worthy and acceptable to all involved.

5. That was hysterical!
I was always afraid to open it and never did, just kept watching it float back up the page — kinda like the thread that never ended.

Thank you for posting this and finally getting me to look. It definitely has potential to be turned into something.

If you haven't looked yet, please do. I have now converted and am an Oscarite. LMAO!

9. So, you think Oscar is a Joke?
Best not to give your true name or address out. We *true* believers might make an example of you.

Unless, you are ready to repent?

12. Go read the thread which is linked at the top of this thread
It is a long read, but is hilarious.

Then read this one (first read the thread about the missing briefcase
linked at the start of the Tao of Oscar):

Tao of Oscar is here:
