He may not physically look the part, but you can do amazing things with makeup nowadays, and his voice acting in the various animated series is absolutely outstanding. He's got the definitive "Joker voice" in my opinion, complete with a downright disturbing laugh.

If you want to look around online, I'm sure there are plenty of audio files out there to illustrate my point.

Or YouTube files, for that matter:

2. Yeah, I can see that. Heath Ledger has an uphill climb to make me think of him as "the Joker".
But Hamill has built a solid foundation already- he could really fill that role.

3. At the very least, Nolan should give him a guest-shot
The Joker of "Mask of the Phantasm" is the crown jewel of any of the assorted incarnations from film/television. The menace Hamill lent to this character--in PG-rated constraints, no less--is nothing short of remarkable. Give this guy a life-achievement award, stat.

I trust Christopher Nolan; his track record is impeccable. But yeah, Hamill is owed some kind of appearance.

4. Eh. Hamill is excellent, but
I know how he'd approach the role. Heath Ledger, on the other hand, has a chance to surprise me.

5. That's a brilliant critique IMO
Nicely done!

It would be easy to go with a known property, but it's much more interesting to take the unexpected path. They did such an outstanding job with Batman Begins that I'm willing to trust their choices for the sequel.

6. No, Mark Hamill is more or less typecast
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 12:44 AM by Hippo_Tron
And that's got as much to do with Star Wars as the fact that he didn't do anything big after Star Wars.

Plus, Christopher Nolan's version of The Joker will be unlikely any portrayal that we've seen on film or animation. The character will be fundamentally different than what we saw Jack Nicholson portray in the 1989 film and Mark Hamill play in Mask of the Phantasm.

8. Mark Hamill IS the Joker IMO.
No one else has even come close.
And Kevin Conroy is Batman, even if he doesn't run around in tights onscreen. :)
Although to be fair, those two are getting on in years, so I can see why they'd go with someone else for the live-action version.

9. That, and the fact that they've never done the physical versions
of their characters... although Hamill has come close.

11. Crispin Glover would be better than both -
He's got a case of the crazies that won't stop.

15. I was impressed by his Joker voice, too.
He's apparently too old for the current vision of the character.
