Mud baths in Calistoga this weekend.....ewwww, what a sensation!!

First time for me. It was like stepping into a thick brown hot watery sponge that looked like shit, but thankfully didn't smell like it.

The lady who set us up in the tubs said they were filled with hot mineral water from the natural local springs, peat moss and clay.

We "floated" in separate tubs with our heads resting on little pillows for about 15 minutes, which was just the perfect amount of time. Any longer and I was gonna get claustrophobic from the weight of all the stuff pressing down on my chest. It was like being in the womb. Weird. Don't know if I'd do it again.

Afterwards, we showered for about 10 minutes before stepping into separate bubbling jacuzzi jet tubs filled with hot mineral water. Then we did about 5 minutes in a special steam box thing and THEN we each got a 50 minute massage. Fantastic!

I have done the Bath House routine at Hot Springs AR, but they don't have mud baths there. I have always wanted to do that.

yes, it was definitely a weird sensation, but it's supposed to be incredibly beneficial for your skin.

I looked pretty bizarre when I got out, but the 10 minute shower helped. :D

I thought the "mud bath" itself was over-rated, but that bath in the warm fizzy water was wonderful - rather like being tickled all over by champagne bubbles. They had to practically pull me out when my time was up. And that massage was great, even if I had a masseur who loudly chanted while doing it. I'm an "Om" person myself, but it's kind of weird when someone else is doing it while kneading my spine.

Memorable day. I don't know if that organic grocery across from the baths is still in business, but those were some of the best cherry tomatoes I ever ate that I hadn't grown myself.
