I don't know about any of you but if I had the option of multiple husbands I think I would have to pass.

of MY wife? She's great (and no, she doesn't read DU). I would certainly love to have a couple of her around...I wonder if she feels the same about me? Sounds like a great dinner topic...

DH and I had this conversation once. We'd send DH#2 out to work so DH#1 and I could hang around the house all day. :)

7. Two of them?
You gotta be joking--right? WE just got done with his cold and it was no picnic, lemme tell you. I realize guys are just guys--but this "Mine is bigger/longer/worse than yours..." thing they do really is just no fun. (Especially when it comes to being the wife putting up with it!)

I love him--but gawd, if there were two sick at the same time I might just have to kill somebody!

9. I used to want six husbands:
One for each day of the week!

Monday - Car Mechanic
Tuesday - Doctor
Wednesday - Handyman
Thursday - Chiropractor
Friday - Hairdresser
Saturday - Rock Star (so I'd have something to do)
Sunday - my day of rest!

I was even willing to let them each keep their own homes. Then I could take turns spending their day with them. Sunday I'd just hang out at my own place!

You know, I never really had any takers. Wonder why...

12. Ever see "Captain's Paradise" with Alec Guinness?
He had two wives, one in Gibraltar and one in North Africa. He always had remember to change the obligatory spouse photo halfway across when visiting. And that was the least of his problems!

No, one spouse is quite enough.

18. I need a wife.
Does anyone remember that feminist essay (really acerbic) from the 70's?

But, truly, I need a wife. To pick up the slack and feed us nutritious meals and make sure we have clean clothes to wear and see that the home is somewhat organized and not so often a chaotic mess and make sure all our distant family connections are healthy and well-maintained and arrange for home repairs and make sure the bills are paid in a timely manner and see that the child is properly supervised 24-7 and and volunteer at school and the community and make sure that the cabinets are full of food and shampoo and toilet paper and see that car maintenance is kept up and be able to get the non-drivers to their appointments and that the pets are well-cared for and that entertaining is handled skillfully and often so that the entire family does not become a pariah and...and...and...

I have great admiration for the people doing this JOB. And it is full-time and fuller than that. Did I mention I am a wife? The wife needs a wife. How sad is that?

21. Girl, howdy.
I tried for years (broken up with sporadic employment, Ha). Now I am employed. I am f*ucking exhausted. And the fella-type is no slouch at those things, but he is exhausted too. I think that we oughta do it like the elephants. Daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts all live together. When the males get to be adolescent, they take their dirty socks and scummy used cereal bowls off somewhere and come back when they are manly elephants and it's time to fight and mate.

Do you think this will work? I actually like to have the manly elephants around even when it's not mating time. It seemed like a good idea when I typed it. What can I say, I need a wife. I wouldn't mind female conversation either.

I was all the parent/cook/chauffeur/mechanic/nurse practitioner/confidant there was to be found around THIS place, bay-bee.....

Really, don't you think referencing some feminist writing from the 70's is like a guy citing some "how to be a wife" essay fom the 50's? We've come a LITTLE ways since then (some of us have).

But to stay on topic, I read that Sitting Bull had 2 wives, sisters, even. they were jealous of each other, and bedtime was purported to not be much fun around the ol' Bull tipi...

It came off that way, I'm sure. I like the big elephants. Just, I must admit, it is easier to have someone taking care of the home stuff. That essay, too, had to do with a wife getting a man through school, and on and on until he got a better wife. It's old, but was important to me when I was coming of age.

So, apologies to you and all those who toil to make a good life for those you love. I applaud you. I can also live with the cereal bowls.

The stinky socks, though, just need to be burnt.

on edit: I applauder you! More proof, I shouldn't be in charge of anything.

15. My husband wouldn't like it
He is not an overly jealous type. He lets me have male friends, even my best friend. He has made it clear that there is to be no physical contact, however. I don't think that he would accept that arrangement.
I think that would be my biggest concern about having two husbands. They would get jealous and hate each other.
I think that this would be a problem for most Americans.
I wouldn't want my husband to have another wife either. Well maybe if she did all the housework and he clearly preferred me, but then she'd hate me.

32. Why do you assume none of us do?
I mean, I know legally you can't have two spouses, but there are a HELL of a lot of people in this country who consider themselves married to more than one spouse.

As for me, sure, I could deal with multiple husbands, if they didn't all expect to LIVE with me. It's the shared housing part I have a problem with. I need my personal space!

I am sure there are people who are in polygamist type relationships but for the majority its not the case...but if it were....would people opt for it???

Just curious...

37. like the one I have
but it is fun to ponder different options, I like the different days of the week concept. There was a funny commercial last year about a woman who puts a different head on her date... she had different heads on her shelf. And yes, guys would have to have the same option. That was pretty funny.

On the work side, I think some research supports that women tend to do more of the housework, although my husband would disagree. Maybe we all just need more help, period. It is a lot of work to take care of kid(s)and the more the merrier. Peter Coyote talks about this in his book, forget the title, about being raised in a commune, where you could always take a nap when you needed to, since there were so many people to watch the kids. I like the troika approach to child-rearing, for example, three groups to help out, parents, grandparents, school/ daycare/ babysitter.
