WVU #1 "Party School"..... again. *ugh*
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/20/party.schools.ap/index.html

Anyone who has gone or currently goes here knows this already. It's a running joke that there are more bars than there are year-round residents.

Oktoberain and i might just be the only people who went to class yesterday/today NOT hung-over. *L*

I'm sure the incoming University President will be sitting in his office today, beating his head on his desk and muttering "What did i get myself INTO". *L*

1. I'm sure it's not a surprise to the incoming president
WVU has been a major party school ever since I can remember. We used to regularly riot in Sunnyside after football games, set furniture on fire in the streets, trash fraternity houses, roll down High Street drunk....ah, those were the days. We had head shops back then, too.

16. I think not
I was there around the same time as Garrison, and I don't recall him being of the tee-totaler set. Not to mention that he's from Fairmont and probably grew up going to WVU games.

2. And what a charming lot they are too
I have been to several football mad schools but I have never seen or even imagined people acting like they did in Morgantown. This was last year when my family's alma mater-and in state rival that WVU begrudgingly finally agreed to play- came in for a slaughter. The game itself was a foregone conclusion. Aside from that WVU fans were the most foul mouthed assholes I have ever seen. When a car pulls out of the line of cars heading into the game to point at a group of people dressed in green getting ice at a gas station and proceeds to claim that they know the most minute details of our collective sexual preferences and habits let alone people walking out of their way to get face to face with someone (just happened to be just back from Iraq) to call them ....well you get the idea-this punk stayed with us for about a 1/4 mile red faced screaming. Embarassing. And we had heard from Tech fans that THEY EVEN thought WVU was over the top.

WVU is on the cover of SI this week and they play at Marshall on Sept.8th-I am going to be there but I am going to act like I have some decent "home training" as they say.

17. I was at that game last year
I got into a fight.

Drunken WVU students were throwing Beer cans at elderly MU fans walking past there tailgate after the game.

I took exception, and waded in.

Bunch of assholes, and they are proud of their behavior.

3. Oh I remember those days
The University of Missouri used to be regularly hung with that same tag, back in the sixties and seventies. It was absolutely insane around here, what with the drunks on the lawns, the alcohol fueled injuries, the car wrecks, etc. We locals would generally hole up on football weekends and let the madness take control.

Sadly, this seemed to be a definitive draw for perspective students who weren't here to study but instead to party. It finally took a major Greek town riot with thousands in the streets and a high school kid kill while climbing a power pole drunk. The university and community cracked down, and though they haven't eliminated the partying, they have brought in under control.

I feel for you folks, and wish you the best. And remember, this too will pass.

4. Oy! UGA is ranked 5th. President Adams was on local AM radio today doing damage control.
Top Party Schools
1. West Virginia University
2. University of Mississippi
3. University of Texas, Austin
4. University of Florida
5. University of Georgia
6. Penn State University
7. University of New Hampshire
8. Indiana University, Bloomington
9. Ohio University, Athens
10. University of California, Santa Barbara

:eyes: Athens is a great town and UGA is a great land grant school. For instance one of the world's best programs in ecology: The Institute of Ecology is located here; the top rated undergraduate environmental design school (and second rated graduate school) in the nation is here and and our plant sciences program is world ranked among many other programs in many different schools and colleges.

(Our football team isn't too bad either! ;) )

5. It's West Virginia - what else can you do in that godforsaken state?
:hide:

Anyhow, I was suprised that schools like Liberty, Bob Jones, Oral Roberts and those other superduber religious schools were not in the top 10 of soberest schools

15. Is Morgantown 'the South?'
Genuinely curious on this point - it's way closer to Pittsburgh than it is to, say, Richmond. I wonder how Morgantown locals (maybe not students) self-identify? I mean, aside from the extra toes and the unclebrothers and stuff.

18. Technically, yes
Morgantown is south of the Mason-Dixon line (about 5 miles south, but still). The folks in North Central WV identify, culturally speaking, more with Pittsburgh and SW PA than they do with "the South." The southern half of the state is culturally southern.

8. You better watch out Alabama was #1 a few years ago.
Then we got a new fundie president who made the bars close at 2 and put restrictions on any new bars being made. It has made Tuscaloosa a bit boring.

No more bars are going to be shut down, and I think there are plans to rebuild the Booth. I dont really care about The Booth, or Galletes as they are both frat magnets. I prefer Cheap Shots and The Houndstooth.

14. Who makes these lists?
What are the criteria?

Seems like half the colleges in the U.S. lay claim to being the No. 1 Party School.

:wtf:

22. I assure you that's not true
One of their criteria is the number of unmarried young people. Well, with five military installations I assure you that's quite a high number, but a lot of them don't leave base, or have ongoing relationships with people in other states to whom they remain faithful.

Colorado Springs being the number two dating city in the US proves one thing: all the people who made that list should be fired.
