Anybody Else Here Have a Diabetic Cat? Prissy and I need a hug.
How are you doing with this?

My poor cat and me just seem to go round and round - bad to all right and then back to bad.

We are doing fine with the insulin shots (those are easy) but now she has quit eating - which really messes up her inulin for the day.

Took her back to the vet (we live there in a back room now LOL) and she isn't eating because of bad teeth. So I am feeding her baby food and she is really liking that and eating much better.

We could use a hug today.

1. Hugs to you and Prissy.
Our cat has had health problems for about a week now. The vet still doesn't know what exactly is wrong. She has been more active today and has been drinking water, but still not really eating.

It's just no fun when your lil baby is ill. Best to you and Prissy, and say a lil prayer for our lil Daisy too if you can.

2. Hugs to you and Prissy.
I have a diabetic cat. She was diagnosed about 2 years ago. She went on the "catkins" diet first to see if she could get by without the shots. That didn't work so we started giving her shots. She's done well since then. Sorry about the eating problem, I hope it works out for you.

4. I had a diabetic cat and so did my mother.
you can get them regulated between the insulin and food. I fed mine solid gold canned food. There is a message board, these people saved us. I even tested at home using a regular home test kit that people use. It's really easy once you get the hang of it.

these people are awesome. Good luck!

5. Absolutely the best place for help with
diabetic felines. I had 2 at once. The one that was diagnosed first suffered a lot because of a vet who really didn't a give a shit about the animal. The people on the fd board saved his life and my sanity so that when his brother started showing symptoms, I had a better handle on it. The first was 11 when he was diagnosed, the second 12. The first died of cancer, the second is still alive, almost 18 and you'd never know there's anything wrong with him.

7. Thanks for all of the Hugs. Prissy is better.
She wasn't eating because of her teeth. So I have been feeding her babyfood and she is eating again. She is on antibiotics for a few days to see if we can get her teeth in better shape.

I have been thinking about home testing. My vet even suggested it yesterday. Trying to get the courage up to try. Prissy doesn't like to be messed with and runs and hides under the bed.

But now that I am getting her to eat again I can give her insulin and not worry about her going Hypo on me.

8. sending you a hug
my cat is not diabetic, but asmatic. And I've been very fortunate to be able to keep her condition well-controlled.

I did have one cat w/ VERY bad teeth. We had them cleaned, had a whole bunch of them pulled and now she eats (even dry food) just fine. In fact, she gained weight after we had all those teeth pulled. I call her my toothless wonder.

9. Yep. We Had Two
Two sisters from the same litter. Both got it at somewhere around 9 years old. They made it for another 6 years or so.

You're right. The teeth seem to go because of the diabetes. It's REALLY hard to regulate the sugar of a cat, and the vet can't do blood sugar through surface veins. (At least, they couldn't a few years back.)

We had to adjust times and dosages several times over the years.

It's a chore to keep these kitties happy when they've got this pernicious malady.

Take care and chin up.

10. Two of them. One died three years ago and one is doing fine at fourteen.
He got different treatment than my other cat and no longer needs insulin. He gets high protein, low carb food.

http://felinediabetes.com/ is a great resource if you don't already know about it.

Good luck and  to you and Prissy.

13. I've got one.
He's almost 17, and was diagnosed just over a year ago. He gets his insulin shots twice a day and is doing quite well. It took a couple of weeks to get the insulin dosage "dialed in," though.

A hug for you and your baby.

14. I have two, one still on insulin and
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 02:56 PM by CC
one off it for now. One was on insulin twice a day for about 5 months. He also got bad teeth and a mouth infection and I have always been good at brushing all the furkids teeth. The vet pulled two of the teeth and gave us antibiotics. He also told me to use Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygiene Solution in the cats water. It has worked wonders and I now use it for all my furkids. The one time I ran out and he missed a week of it he got another infection so I am careful to never run out now.
Karma, the second cat with diabetes is still on insulin twice a day and was much harder to regulate. He also needs more insulin. His may be hereditary since all of his siblings that we know of also are diabetic. Luckily he had been getting the Oxyfresh in his water already so no mouth infections. I'm not sure if the mouth infections are related to the diabetes but I figure if people with diabetes are more prone to infections why wouldn't furkids also be more prone to them.
Neither of the cats would eat the DM food the vet recommended so we searched for something they would eat and all the cats now eat Innova Evo. Karma will not eat soft food so they get dry and all the other cats get some soft food twice a day.
Ayja flipped from diabetic needing insulin over night so I take glucose reading from both on a regular basis. I have also gotten better at judging if something is wrong by the way they act. Specially with a kitty that was on insulin the off then on for a couple weeks and now off again.
The Diabetes in Cats site is a great place for information and support. Just be sure to ask your vet before trying anything new and keep him/her informed about what you do for the kitties.

15. Thankyou so mucy for all the info.
Prissy is getting better. The antibiotic must be working. She is actually eating her regular food now.

I will look for the Oxyfresh for her water - where do you buy yours?

And thanks to everyone for all of the hugs. Sometimes we people with diabetic cats need extra hugs. It can be very vexing and sometimes I just plain get depressed about it all.

But today is a new day - and we are better.

16. You will get used to the shots
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 06:09 PM by CC
and watching how she is doing. With the first cat I freaked and dreaded giving shots. Now I wish any antibiotics etc. would come in shot form for cats. Much easier than giving them a pill or liquid. Second cat I was ready for specially since his siblings were already diabetic though in different homes. We caught it early since we knew what to watch for. At least you caught it and your kitty has a good chance at living a long happy life in spite of the diabetes.

I originally got the Oxyfresh from the vets but now get it here http://oxyfresh.com/pet/default.asp because it is a bit cheaper and I can get it in a bigger size. With 5 cats, 4 dogs and 8 ferrets getting it now the small one wasn't cutting it.

18. Yeah, insulin for Ace for YEARS.
Morning and evening.
In the mornings he knew he couldn't eat until he'd had his shot.
If I wasn't up by 6, he'd come get me.
"Hey, MAN? Come ON! HUNGRY! Give me my fix so I can eat!"

I miss that ol' boy.
