The Smoking Gun presents soldiers' reviews of MREs!
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0820071mre1.html

"I believe it was the dinner meal that caused this (chicken and dumplings) but, it sounded like a flatulence symphony in my tent all night."

:nuke: :hurts:

1. "Five fingers of death"
NPR story when the war was about to start. The platoon in question had a number assigned to each guy -you went in that order picking your MRE, the last guy always got the "Five fingers of death" the hot dog meal

You can do a lot with one MRE. Trust me when you pull a "Pork loaf" out of the box you find ways to feed yourself on it. There are about 3,500 calories in each one so you can go at least a day on just one. Be weary of the oatmeal bar (at least on the ones back in the early 90's) as you won't go to the bathroom (#2) for a few days...this probably can be alleviated by use of the jelly or "explosive jelly" we used to call it. :nuke:

2. Apparently Stuffed Cabbage and Vegetarian meals aren't appreciated
the comments were rather funny...

Although they love the pudding and the granola and want more tabasco...

6. 1975 was the last time they included cigarettes in the rations
..I got that from wikipedia...

I was lucky enough to taste C Rations in elementary school in the 1970's...my teacher was a former Army enlisted man...and he cooked one for us outside...it was quite the adventure....I can't remember the taste or the reaction as much as the "adventure" part where we were outside cooking...

3. They've improved since I left the Army
I remember the "hockey puck", or dehydrated pork or beef patty meal, which came with a little ziplock bag printed with a 'fill to here with water' line. awful. it also came with a 'dehydrated beef broth', which had absolutely no beef in it.

or the omlette with ham meal, which was basically a bag of scrambled eggs with chunks of pork in it. very bad.

I do remember the "five fingers of death", which wasnt that bad after enough tobasco sauce.

favorites - tuna with noodles (also with lots of tobasco), and chicken ala king.

4. I helped use up the last of the "c" rations!
The first two years in the Marine corps we were still eating the canned stuff. I preferred those to the MRE's we got after that. They had a can with crackers and a disk of chocolate that made the meals!
