Before anyone yells at me, I know the comment was intended in genuine kindness, and I responded in the same manner with, "He's my little buddy! So is she," and I indicated SophieMN, since it's kind of crappy to hear, y'know, that your brother's an angel from God and all, and you're... I don't know...just kinda' *there*.

Actually I think that is because there is a somewhat macabre short story by Dorothy Allison where a childhood friend of hers is called that all the time by her mother...I knew it sounded familiar.

all in the "cuteness" range. I had a very pretty sister and when adults would come up and comment, I was the "kinda there" kid.

When I was four and five years old, my grandmother would often remark that my (profoundly disabled) brother was an "angel," and my mother (who took care of him) was a "saint." So I pretty much figured that if I fell into one of those nice categories she would have said something, and concluded that I must be a major disappointment to the family/spawn of Satan in comparison.

It really did have an impact on my self-esteem at that age.
