Pit Bulls Enter Home, Attack Sleeping Woman

<snip>

GIG HARBOR, Wash. -- Two pit bulls that entered a Gig Harbor home through a pet door attacked and severely injured a woman while she slept, sheriff's deputies told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The dogs may have gone into the house to attack another dog, according to animal control officers. They attacked the woman in her bed as she tried to fight off the dogs.

Deputies said the woman got a gun and fired at the dogs, but the attack continued. She was eventually able to escape the house, get into her car and call 911.

According to deputies, after the pit bulls attacked the woman they went after a neighbor’s Jack Russell terrier, killing it.

“They’ve had problems over there before a couple of houses down with the dogs. It’s one of those things. We just hope Sue is OK,” neighbor Ricky Russell said.

Pierce County animal control officers were able to capture the pit bulls.

33. Perhaps it was a deliberate attack? I could see pitbulls used like that.
Don't like somebody? Acquire two pitbulls -- grab something that has the smell of the victim -- send them to hunt!

Any dog on a mission, especially a strong one, is hard to deter. At least that is my experience.

11. Well, sure. But the woman attacked did what she could do.
Whether it was the best thing or not, who knows. But yelling at or beating an angry dog makes matters worse.

16. That is absolutely true. But I have a Houdini dog who has
gotten out in ways I never thought possible. I have reinforced my yard and it hasn't happened since, but it scared me to think of what may have happened the day he roamed the neighborhood while I was at work and had no clue he was even out. I would have been responsible for anything he did while out but I am a very responsible dog owner. Sad that many aren't. It makes me cringe.

24. I have a dog that I refer to as a Houdini dog, also. I have finally
gotten her area reinforced enough that she hasn't been out on her own for a couple of years, but it took some doing. She is very resourceful and I wouldn't realize that a spot could be an escape route until she discovered it and got out.

Owner should be up on serious charges. I don't let my retriever run loose and his big threat would be slobber.

17. I don't believe it is as simple as looking at the attributes of the breeds...
that make up the dog. Mixing of breeds leads to unpredictable behaviors, regardless of the breeds involved.

26. I agree with that, wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, it has been my
experience that many people who own pit bulls have them for the wrong reasons and are more likely to raise them in that kind of environment. Around my neighborhood this breed (and mixes) are the most predominant because of their "macho" image. Most of them are chained or confined to a very small area, they are never socialized and get very little attention. This would tend to make most dogs agressive.

29. If properly raised, they are not agressive towards humans
However, they are very strong, stubborn, and easily excitable

When they do attack, they don't quit and can do a lot of damage

44. I also heard that Terriers could be extremely dangerous little dogs.
I think I was watching the documentary "Dogs that changed the world" (not sure if part 1 or 2) and they were talking about how Terriers were bred to be extremely agressive as they were used to guard grain from vermin. That they were trained not just to kill but to kill with a violent shaking motion so they could kill dozens of vermin in a fairly short space of time, if need be.

I worry about Pit Bulls (never heard anything about Goldens being especially violent (all animals, IMO, have some standard potential for unexplained violence) but I've got to say I've run across lots of Terriers who had very bad tempers.

Which makes it all the worse because Terriers are "cute" little dogs and alot of people aren't aware of this bred-in killing prowise.

46. what a nightmare
in the slideshow they show a neighbor holding a pom or papillon or something similar and it says that those dogs have attacked his dog before. This is why I think that attacks on other animals should not be disregarded by animal control like they are in so many places. An aggressive dog is an aggressive dog and if they are attacking animals in the neighborhood something needs to be done in those individual cases BEFORE something like this happens and causes a city to implement a breed band out of reaction to it. I think it's possible these owners could get sued by this woman...they will probably wish animal control had stepped in a long time ago. Christ.
