interesting IP noticed on a torrent download
I'm downloading a video called "Bush's Brain - Karl Rove Documentary" and I was scrolling the IPs listed on the torrent. One had the cia.com listed.

Tin hat time -- is it possible that the cia hasn't seen this documentary? Anyone good at finding locations from an IP number?

4. It's not that CIA.
They would be something like cia.gov.

8. I thought most companies locked up the extensions
like gov., org., com, etc. Guess the cia isn't interested in keeping their inittials totally to themselves.

9. You can't "lock up" top-level domains (i.e. .com .edu . org)...
...those are managed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). As someone already posted, if it was the "CIA", it would be from a .gov domain, which, if you go to www.cia.gov, it's obviously their Public Affairs site.

11. The White House certainly didn't.
Government and business aren't the same thing, in any way shape or form.

And when you ask questions about how well the government really understands the way the internet works, just keep in mind that they put Ted "Series of Tubes" Stevens in charge of regulating it.

5. It's coming from Calgary...
It's registered to CyberSurf, Inc. If you call Paul Mercia at 403-605-4821, you can discuss it with him, or just e-mail him at paul_mercia@hotmail.com.

10. IP or DNS name?
cia.com sounds like a DNS name (most government entities use .gov, not .com)

And if it is an actual number, like 10.100.89.122 then I'd worry. That's a direct IP address; which DNS names help resolve. It's easier to remember a DNS name than a full IP address.
