Kind of going off the "What State capitals have you been to" thread, I figured I'd start a discussion as to which states I've been to. (Although I'm sure it's probably been done before) Not that impressive and mostly towards the East Coast, but still I've been to a few:
Maryland (state of my birth and where I was raised, of course) Florida (state where I currently reside) Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Delaware Pennsylvania New Jersey New York Connecticut Vermont West Virginia Kentucky Texas Nevada Arizona
In listing the states I've "been" to, I have a certain criteria. I must either: a) physically walk on the ground of that state or b) walk in a fixed structure attached to the ground of that state. In other words, I've got to breath the air of the state, indoors or outdoors. Therefore, some of the states that I've been to are under rather nominal circumstances.
My only experience with Texas was a layover at the Dallas airport on my way to Nevada and Arizona. I spent enough time there to grab lunch and read a newspaper. But because I got off the plane and physically walked around the airport, I include it in my list.
Connecticut I count as well, even though my only real experience with there is when I was in New York and my wife and I got lost, we stopped at a gas station in Connecticut to ask for directions. But I got out of the car and walked around, so I count Connecticut.
I don't count layovers where I never departed from the airplane. Therefore, although I was once on an airplane which had a layover in Birmingham but I never got off the plane, I don't count Alabama as a state I've been to yet.
I also don't count trips taken when you were an infant or toddler, as you don't remember those. When I was 1 or 2, my family went to Kansas to see a relative, so I guess in other circumstances I could have "been" to Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. But because I remember nothing of that trip personally, I don't include it.
I've also been to Quebec and Ontario, and Nassau in the Bahamas. And that, friends, is the extent of my travels. Sad, yes, but I'm only 28 so hopefully I still have time.
When I went out to Nevada and Arizona, my original plan was I was going to rent a car and drive from Vegas to my friend, who was working at the Grand Canyon at the time. I was going to take a small detour in the drive and cross the border into Needles, and I would use the restroom or get something to eat and therefore I could say I've "been" to California (barely). But as it happened, my friend picked me up at the Vegas airport and we drove straight to the Grand Canyon, so I didn't get to claim that. Although I'd love to plan to go to California proper someday if I get the time.
