What Is Your Favorite 'Genesis' Song
Ooh yeah
You know I never wanted to be closer
And I'll still be here until it's over
No, no I never wanted to be closer
But you'll be back, I could've told you

Well I always knew
Yes I could see it coming
Your ambitious streak
You always want things beyond your reach
Well now you've got what you wanted
And you're free to be the things
You always said you'd be
You're up there looking down
Tell me what do you see - oh

Cos you know
You know I never wanted to be closer
And I'll still be here until it's over
No, no I never wanted to be closer
Yeah, but you'll be back, I could've told you

Well it seems to me
That you've got to fight for yourself
In this world we live in
It's dog-eat-dog and never give in
Why worry when you're holding the aces
Don't throw it away cos you know
I'd rather be you than me
Up there looking down
Tell me what do you see - oh

hey hey yeah

Ooh yeah
You know I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
And I'll still be here 'til it's over
No, no I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
Ooh but you'll be back, I could've told you

It's been a long time coming
But at last we seem to be moving on, straight ahead
We're finally getting something done
Time flies and 'fore you know it
You'll be getting closer to where
You always knew you'd be
Up there looking down
Tell me what do you see - oh

Cos you know
No, no I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
I'll still be here until it's over
No, you know I never wanted to be closer (never wanted)
Yeah but you'll be back, I could've told you

hey hey yeah...

2. One from the OTHER Genesis: "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight"
"Can you tell me where my country lies?"
Said the unifaun to his true love's eyes
"It lies with me!", cried the Queen of Maybe
For her merchandise, he traded in his prize

"Paper late!", cried a voice in the crowd
"Old man dies!" The note he left was signed
"Old Father Thames" - it seems he's drowned
Selling England by the pound

Citizens of Hope & Glory
Time goes by - it's "the time of your life"
Easy now, sit you down
Chewing through your Wimpey dreams
They eat without a sound
Digesting England by the pound

Young man says "you are what you eat" - eat well
Old man says "you are what you wear" - wear well
You know what you are, you don't give a damn
Bursting your belt that is your homemade sham

The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
Join the dance...
Follow on! Till the Grail sun sets in the mould
Follow on! Till the gold is cold
Dancing out with the Moonlit Knight
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout

There's a fat old lady outside the saloon
Laying out the credit cards she plays Fortune
The deck is uneven right from the start
And all of their hands are playing a part

The Captain leads his dance right on through the night
Join the dance...
Follow on! A Round Table-talking down we go
You're the show!
Off we go with: You play the hobbyhorse
I'll play the fool
We'll tease the bull
Ringing round & loud, loud & round
Follow on! With a twist of the world we go
Follow on! Till the gold is cold
Dancing out with the Moonlit Knight
Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout

But Gabriel... hell, he was TWISTED. No contest.

I cried about a Phil Collins song on the radio the other day, a lady was telling the story of how her boyfriend broke up with her and Against All Odds was their song. Then they played the song and I lost it
Genesis wasn't really my favorite when I was young but now I think they're great :D

37. I was involved with a man
when that song came out and we broke it off due to - lots of things.

A few years later after that movie came out, it played on tv one night. Later, in the middle of the night my phone rang. No one said anything and I hung up. It didn't dawn on me until afterwards that it was probably him. (He'd always had a habit of calling me in the wee hours.) Never heard from him again.

Though I saw him at a ballgame years later. He was with a family - wife/kids? - so I just kept walking. I'm pretty sure he saw me, too.

ok - enough tearjerking reminiscing for one night.

15. WAAAAAAHHHHHH! LATER GENESIS ISN'T PROG ENOUGH! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
There. Got that out of the way for all of you snobs. :)

I find that a lot of my favorite Genesis tunes are from the "middle" period. (Post-Gabriel, pre-Hackett's departure.) I would say "Los Endos," but that's a PIECE rather than a SONG.

Oh, I don't know. I can't decide. Never mind.

P.S. The "Invisible Touch" album kicks ass. Is it prog? No, but it's good songwriting and playing.

18. Firth of Fifth, Fountain of Salmacis, Dance On A Volcano
Though I also love Moonlit Knight, Get Em Out By Friday, Seven Stones, Entangled, even Abacab (neat tune.)

"Fading Lights" off "We Can't Dance" was a really good tune too, they made contact with their prog roots for that one, even has a great melodic solo from Tony Banks, who is a criminally-underrated keyboardist, IMHO. Extremely tasteful and brilliant player.

San Jacinto

Thick cloud - steam rising - hissing stone on sweat lodge fire
Around me - buffalo robe - sage in bundle - run on skin
Outside - cold air - stand, wait for rising sun
Red paint - eagle feathers - coyote calling - it has begun
Something moving in - I taste it in my mouth and in my heart
It feels like dying - slow - letting go of life

Medicine man lead me up though town - Indian ground -
so far down
Cut up land - each house - a pool - kids wearing water
wings - drink in cool
Follow dry river bed - watch Scout and Guides make
pow-wow signs
Past Geronimo's disco - Sit 'n' Bull steakhouse - white
men dream
A rattle in the old man's sack - look at mountain top -
keep climbing up
Way above us the desert snow - white wind blow

I hold the line - the line of strength that pulls me through
the fear
San Jacinto - I hold the line
San Jacinto - the poison bite and darkness take my sight -
I hold the line
And the tears roll down my swollen cheek - think I'm losing
it - getting weaker
I hold the line - I hold the line
San Jacinto - yellow eagle flies down from the sun -
from the sun

We will walk - on the land
We will breathe - of the air
We will drink - from the stream
We will live - hold the line

22. I have Genesis on the media player right now! What a coinkidink!
Gabriel era, "Supper's Ready", "Watcher of the Skies", "Firth of Fifth", "Musical Box"...and the whole damned Lamb LP, great stuff.

Collins era, "Home by the Sea", "Land of Confusion", "Mama", "Squonk", "Dance on a Volcano", "Fading Lights", "Jesus, he Knows Me", "Turn it on Again" "Los Endos".

If I had to pick one, I'd have to say "Supper's Ready".

32. My favorites:
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 09:47 PM by njdemocrat106
Gabriel-era: "Supper's Ready", "The Knife", "I Know What I Like", "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (hell, the entire album, really)

Collins-era: "Dance on a Volcano", "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight", "Land of Confusion", "Mama"

Yes, I like both "cool Genesis" (Gabriel) and "cheesy Genesis" (Collins). If it wasn't for me liking the Invisible Touch era stuff, I probably would have never discovered the Gabriel stuff (time for a bad analogy: it was like breaking into my parents' old liquor cabinet and finding fine single-malt scotch whiskies. Does that make any sense? :) ).

33. Throwing it all away
Edited on Wed Aug-29-07 10:00 PM by mzteris
Need I say I love you
Need I say I care
Need I say that emotions,
Something we dont share
I dont want to be sitting here
Trying to deceive you
Cos you know I know baby
That I dont wanna go.

We cannot live together
We cannot live apart
Thats the situation
Ive known it from the start
Every time that I look at you
I can see the future
Cos you know I know babe
That I dont wanna go.

Throwing it all away
Throwing it all away
Is there nothing that I can say
To make you change your mind
I watch the world go round and round
And see mine turning upside down
Youre throwing it all away.

Now who will light up the darkness
Who will hold your hand
Who will find you the answers
When you dont understand
Why should I have to be the one
Who has to convince you
Cos you know I know baby
That I dont wanna go.

Someday youll be sorry
Someday when youre free
Memories will remind you
That our love was meant to be
Late at night when you call my name
The only sound youll hear
Is the sound of your voice calling
Calling after me.

Just throwing it all away
Throwing it all away
Theres nothing I can say
Were throwing it all away
Yes were throwing it all away...

on second thought - I don't know if "favorite" would be the right word. :(

edit to add: my other "favorite" wasn't a Genesis but "just" a Phil Collins song - Against All Odds.

Where's that "what's the soundtrack of your life" thread?

35. Duchess
Times were good,
She never thought about the future, she just did what she would
Oh but she really cared
About her music, it all seemed so important then,

And she dreamed that every time that she performed
Everyone would cry for more,
That all she had to do was step into the light,
And everyone would start to roar.

And on the road,
Where all but a few fall by the wayside on the grassier verge,
She battled through
Against the others in her world, and the sleep, and the odds.

But now everytime that she performed
Oh everybody cried for more,
Soon all she had to do was step into the light,
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you're the one we've waited for.

Oh but time went by
It wasn't so easy now, all uphill, and not feeling so strong.
Yes times were hard,
Too much thinking 'bout the future and what people might want.

And then there was the time that she performed
When nobody called for more
And soon everytime she stepped into the light,
They really let her know the score.
But she dreamed of the times when she sang all her songs
And everybody cried for more,
When all she had to do was step into the light
For everyone to start to roar.
And all the people cried, you're the one we've waited for.
