Mine is a corker.

"Gone With the Wind."

Never seen it, probably never will. And I live in Charleston SC, where it's practically a requirement when you renew your drivers license.

1. I never saw E.T. or Dances with Wolves
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 08:34 AM by LynneSin
I've seen it show up on cable a few times and thought maybe this time I'd sit down and watch the movie. But about 5 minutes into the movie either I grow bored or fall asleep.

"Dances with Wolves" looks like a giant size sleeping pill to me. I'd rather watch Gigli than to sit through that movie.

BTW, I saw "Gone With the Wind" just once and that was more than enough times. I found Scarlett O'Hara to be the most annoying movie character and personally I think Rhett Butler should have given her the boot about 5 minutes into the movie

33. Oh, no! Casablanca is worth
seeing. You MUST think of the context in which it was made, the middle of WWII when it wasn't entirely clear the good guys would win.

I had never seen it, knew almost nothing about it, when my now-husband took me to it when we were first dating. I was 30 years old, mind you, and had remained almost completely ignorant of it.

Lucky me, because I saw it with fresh eyes, as if it were 1943 and I was in those first audiences. I was completely surprised by the final scene and loved it. Not to the point where I'd want to see it again and again, but I think most people now simply already know too much about it to see it with fresh eyes, and that's too bad.

And to do it right, you must see it in a theatre.

66. ahh...
one of my biggest pet peeves. Those weren't trite cliche's when the movie was made. They were just imitated so much, that they seem so now.

I once had a fight with a young'un who said Hitchcock was nothing but cliche's. After I beat him soundly with a fireplace poker, I explained they BECAME cliche's because every other director imitated him.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 08:42 AM by JCCyC
I saw neither of the three LOTRs.

Old: Dr. Zhivago... Love Story... Mr. Smith Goes to Washington... Citizen Kane... The Manchurian Candidate... lots more probably. Every now and then a classic shows up on TV and I'll watch it. Saw Gone With The Wind that way.

Somewhat Old: Chariots of Fire... The French Connection...

Edit to add some more.

79. I want to do a Viewer's Cut edition of Titanic
...cut out the whole Rose/Jack bullshit teenybopper love fantasy. There're two scenes that are almost worth sitting through all that nonsense; the scene with the captain (Bernard Hill, who also plays Theoden in LOTR) standing in the wheelhouse as the water breaks through, and the scene with McAndrews, the designer, stopping the clock in the main parlor as the boat sinks. Both ten times more moving than any of the trumped-up "romantic" silliness.

9. Heh...
I've never seen GWTW either. Nor "Miracle on 34th Street," "The Magnificent Ambersons," "Birth of a Nation" or "Potemkin." And I took film theory! (I was sick a lot that semester, though.)

As for more recent pop unmissables, I've not seen "Titanic" or "Schindler's List." They hype on "Titanic" was so offputting I just avoided it. Ditto for "Schindler", but I'll likely never see it, as I've come to take a perverse sort of pride in being the only living Jewish person who hasn't watched it.

Here's the capper: I've never seen any of the "Godfather" trilogy.

"Office Space" and "Cabin Boy," however, I've watched dozens of times each. I should probably get my head examined.

Actually, I'm free tonight. A rentin' I shall go! I'm going record shopping this afternoon anyway, and as it happens, the really good mom & pop video store in my area is in the same 'hood as the good indie record stores, so I've no more excuses. Thanks for lighting that fire under my ass.

20. Oh, you MUST.
When you do finally sit down and watch it (the version that recently came out as part of the Kubrick DVD box set is the best, IMO), you'll see the genesis of a great number of references and snarks that pepper ordinary conversation to this day. And Peter Sellers playing like 4 or 5 parts and being 100% his usual brilliant self in every single one - amazing. I won't even get started on the delusional general...

56. Battleship Potemkin.
Obviously any classic movie is readily obtainable nowadays with fairly minimal effort, so the question perhaps should be:

"What classic movie would you like to watch if it fell into your lap, but you are too darned lazy to go check it out yourself, and too cheap to order it online?"

Anyhow, Battleship Potemkin has never fallen into my lap. I finally did see Triumph of the Will several years ago. That used to be a little hard to find, but it is always listed as a cinematic milestone so it's worth watching if it comes your way. Or get it at Amazon.

see 'em both.

well not the Godfather "trilogy". Fuck the third one. See the first two. Two of the best movies ever made. Add in Clockwork Orange, and you've got three of the best.

and don't want to ruin them by seeing the movies. I haven't been tempted to open the Potter books. :hi:

Mrs. G - see the movies. They're great, and they don't detract from the books.

And read the Potter books! They're great!

75. I highly recommend them....
I read the first one out of curiosity: WHAT could possibly get 9-year old boys to read?

and I fell in love. Last year, when the latest book came out, my awesome local independent bookseller had a big party - at midnight. There was a line down the street full of excited children waiting for the book.

After I'd gotten my copy, I was heading back to the car, and I saw a 10 year old kid, in full Harry Potter regalia, sitting under a streetlight at 1:00am reading. It warmed my heart.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie with Meryl Streep. Not that I hate her or actively avoid her. The movies she typically appears in just aren't my cup o' tea.

I think I detect a pattern. When I was in the army I couldn't read Catch 22 because it pissed me off. It took many years before I was able to see the humor.

You will be totally in awe of the cinematography of this film around 1960. So many other movies were inspired by it! The DVD is incredible.
