PUI: How come XENA never won an Emmy?
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 12:27 AM by supernova
Recently started recording and watching XENA again. Since I'm on the rag and full of wine and insomnia, just thought I'd share. ;-)

This show is spectacular in every way you could poosilby measure. The writing, the action sequences, the reimagning of Greek mythology (always a fertile ground).

edit: The reason I think they should have won something is that in watching it, every frame, every movement, every episode reeks of an intense passion for the project. It's so obvious that so many people just poured their heart and souls into it. It's an hour of total passion and joy. :D

And you know, just between you and me, if I ever wanted to be a brunette, I'd like to come back as Lucy Lawless, all athletic 5' 10" of her.

1. Kick for the daylight crowd
I'd really like an answer to this question. It's been bugging me for a long time.

20. Mmmmm....actually
she did--she divorced hubby and married Rob Tapert, the show's producer.

11. That's true
in some ways, gabielle is the more interesting character.

13. Xena is the one who kicks ass
Gabrielle can kick ass too, but Gabrielle's the one who cares.

Plus she's prettier than Xena. :)

4. I've seen a few episodes, here's my guess
All that violence, no death. I'm sorry, with that many swords in play and that metal frisbee crashing around everywhere, somebody's gotta die. Yet, they don't. It's ridiculous.

7. And MacGuyver (sp?)
Just once I'd like to see all those characters get together and just go on a total rampage of destruction against their enemies.

21. Sorry--McGyver
was a pacifist. He hated guns, never used them, and he always got out of peril as non-violently as possible. He used his brain, not normal weapons.

27. And somehow I got a weird mental image of someone using a brain as a weapon.
Or perhaps two brains strung together... Brainchucks!

8. that's what i liked about it
must people just got smacked around or injured. Xena wouldn't kill people randomly. If someone was trying to mug her, she just beat them up.

Whenever somebody actually died on the show it made an impact, because dozens of people didn't die every week.

5. were they eligible?
The show is from new zealand so maybe they weren't eligble. They did win other awards (though of course I can't remember which ones)

oh and fyi lucy lawless is a natural blonde :)

9. She is?
That's interesting because she looks spectaular as a brunette.

I don't think a NZ production would be a problem, otherwise LOTR couldn't win so many awards.

12. but LOTR was backed by a US studio
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 12:21 PM by liontamer
I don't know what the rules are for emmys exactly, but I imagine there's a nationality component.

For example while the british version of the office won a golden globe, only the US version won an emmy.

Xena and Hurcules were produced by an American company.

24. I didn't know that
I thought they were just distributed by an american company here.
I'm still pretty sure they weren't eligible. Maybe because they weren't officially tied to a timeslot or network?

where to begin. Really bad writing and over acting when it comes to Lucy. Lucy btw is a blond.

I felt really burnt by the end of the show, where Robert Tapert her husband and creator of the series, had Xena's head cut off and hung her in a tree like a trophy. But hey that's just me.

I really miss that show. I do have it on DVD though. Sad how Kevin Smith aka Ares died in real life.

I wonder how Michael Hurst, aka Iolaus is doing these days?

22. I know Michael was doing a lot of directing
so perhaps he's concentrating on that now. He was adorable--I liked him better than Kevin. :)

23. That makes sense about him directing.
I remember he was really involved in the theatre world in New Zealand too.

I really miss that whole cast.

26. God, do I miss Ares!
Yes, it is sad that he died in the prime of life. I adored him on Xena, and was looking forward to seeing him in other things. :-( I had some really great Ares induced dreams.

Kevin Sorbo is cute, but eek! what a wooden actor.

19. If you want the truth
I'd say it was because it was syndicated. I don't believe there have been many shows that are/were in first-run syndication which have been nominated for regular awards like Emmy Awards.

I could be wrong, of course, but that's probably the reason. Actually, I liked Xena a lot, but when Ted Raimi joined the cast as Joxer on a regular basis, it jumped the shark for me.
