"Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra"
Damn, I love this episode of Star Trek: TNG. I especially love Paul Winfield.

1. A brilliant piece of science fiction!
That is one of my very favorite episodes of The Next Generation, along with "Inner Light," "I, Borg," and "Best of both Worlds I and II."

An entire culture that speaks in metaphor derived from their cultural and written history... It's so unique and so brilliant.

3. I know.
It's one of my top episodes, too, along with the others you listed. I also like the one where Data creates his own child.

10. I think those are still the gold standard for science fiction.
So far, nothing has really come close to matching the brilliance of those two episodes, in emotional significance and straight-up coolness. The new Battlestar Galactica has come the closest, but Best of Both Worlds is still the top.

4. The episode is "Darmok".
I was so sad when Winfield died. I love the City Confidential episodes where he's narrating also.

5. A ridiculous premise.
It is ludicrous to suppose that the Universal Translator could recognize proper nouns, yet be unable to render context.

I still love the ep; it's among my handful of favorites.

8. I couldn't buy the premise of that episode.
I think that "The Inner Light" was brilliant piece of science fiction, though. You really didn't need the Star Trek universe for that story to work. It would have been just as brilliant as an episode of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, and that's what I love about it.

11. "The Inner Light" was wonderful
The ending when Picard picks up the flute and starts playing softly brings tears to my eyes every time.

9. While it was a good episode if you could look past the silly premise...
the premise was downright silly enough to have been worthy of the original series. :P
