Anybody famous with a Maine accent?
I am going to be running a D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) game next Friday and was thinking of doing a Maine accent for one of the NPCs ("non-player character" that is run by the game master) that the players may encounter, as I keep having visions of the NPC saying, "And Pepperidge Fahm Remembahs" from the old TV commercial.

However, other than that old guy, I can't recall anybody famous with a Maine accent, and I'm suffering a mental block on going beyond "Fahm remembahs" and I do like to make distinct voices for important NPCs.

I'd like to find a clip or two of somebody speaking in a Maine accent on youtube so I can try to imitate them for this character. I guess I could also use a Boston accent if I can't manage a Maine one...

1. Please don't try to fake the Maine accent; it can't be faked.
I have never in my life heard a passable fake of it.

Plus, there are at least 3 separate Maine accents, all different. Most people think of the Downeast accent, which shared many characteristics with a boston accent. Then there is the Western Maine/inland accent. It is nothing like the Downeast accent, being nasally accent where words flow together almost without regard to spacing or consonants. The western Maine accent is probably most similar to a Northern New Hampshire accent. Then there is The County accent: a weird bastardization of Quebecquoi/Maine accents. Bizarre.

You can sometimes here in Stephen King's voice hintings of the Inland Maine accent.

2. I was going to say Stephen King, too.
Here in NC, we have a vocal spectrum of southern accents, from the coastal to the "Mississippi" plantation accent.

3. It's for a D&D game
anything remotely close is acceptable, as long as it is slightly different than a Boston accent.

4. First try to jam your speech up into your nasal cavity.
Add R's at the end of consonant's ending in ah sounds, and replace spoken R's with 'ah' or 'uh' sounds.
Don't pause between words. Keep your voice monotone unless you are expressing emotion, then allow your voice to wildly go up and down the tonal spectrum.

'Wicked' is a very important universal adjective for very:
n-Yuh, it's wicked hot out.
'Fierce' can be used as well:
She was angry something fierce, ayuh.
Never use Wicked and fierce together. It does not work.

Stick to short simple words and sentences. Don't get wordy. Mainers aren't 'wordy'. A to the point people.

And remember: NASAL!

Slight maine accent:

They don't want you to think they notice.
