Whats the best way of disposing of about 500 assorted vinyl albums from the 60's and 70's?
Are they worth anything? Is it best to sell them as a lot or one (cringe) at a time? Whats the current outlook on their value? Going up in value? Or going down?

If anyone knows about these things thanks in advance for any info.

1. What condition are they in?
And, why, if I may ask, are you disposing of them?

I would put them on Ebay if you think some may be worth something. Definitely check with LynneSin. She's a big collector.

4. I am guessing they are all good to average shape
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 07:37 PM by NNN0LHI
They were my personal collection so I took good care of them. Need the room and they weigh a ton. They take up an entire closet.

Thanks for the advice.

3. I second putting them on eBay
If they are in good shape you may get a lot more for them that way.

5. craigslist would also work...
...but you probably wouldn't get very good price for the lot.

Is there a record club in town that has a monthly swap meet? In my town there's a monthly moonlight record sale at the local Eagles lodge. Pay ten bucks, get a table, have a fun evening.

Is the music mostly pop, jazz, rock, what?

7. Get a USB record player that has a preamp. Copy the music to your
computer. Scan the covers and inside, along with any extra info sheets.

then look to see if they are worth selling.

11. You can use your old turntable and amp
I bought a small amp at a pawnshop specifically for ripping my LP's, but still haven't really gotten busy with it. I will, though, real real soon!

There are vinyl ripping programs that let you record an entire side at once, then it'll chop each song into its own track. You probably already know that, though.

Griffin makes adaptors for turntables.

22. I have some 78's i want to play with
I assume if I record them at 33 and speed them up, while leaving the pitch as is, it'll work. I don't see that damaging the needle or anything.

If you aren't close enought to give them to me, I agree with advice above: make digital copies and sell on e-bay or other.

14. Whadda bout E-bay
and there is some guy occasionally on the radio who is a whiz about knowing how much they are worth but I don't know his name. There must be a web-site out there somewhere that will tell you what records are worth something and which are not. You may be sitting on a mint. Or you may be sitting on a hunk of vinyl junk. Anyway I don't know if I could be any less helpful or any more obscure. You'er welcome. :) Need any more advice?

18. Choose your 10 favorites,
or your favorite covers. Pull them out and frame them (or frame 2 or 3 and rotate the art). Hang them on the wall.

The rest to Ebay! If you have lots you can assemble (like a rockin' colleciton of surfer music, maybe with some not-so-well known artists), it might bring you a higher average price per album for those obscure surfer bands.

21. I've read that Japanese collectors are nuts about vinyl LPs and will pay $$$$$$$ for them.
Apparently albums from America, particularly from that era, draw huge prices in Japan. This is just what I've heard.

23. first, consult the eBay oracle
Type in a few dozen titles, see how they're rated, what's important in determining price, and how much they are going for.

Then decide. Bundling a few good ones with a few mediocre ones in lots of 25 each might be a good idea for eBay. You wind up with 20 lots to sell over the course of however many weeks you want to drag it out.

And I think you can ship record at the "media" rate, which is slow but dirt cheap.

25. If you're in the Los Angeles area I have an expert who buys vinyl.
He's very honest and I have referred him to a least a dozen people.
I'm an antiques/collectible dealer and ebay Powerseller, but I dont'
specialize in records, so I refer all my business to him.

31. Buy a reputable price guide & check out the values.
Some will probably be worth selling individually on ebay or to collectors.

What's not you can sell in a lot on ebay, to collectors or to a used music shop.
