Frightening how quickly your life can crash.
Our daughter just called from Melrose, MA.
She'd taken Charlotte in for her 4 month checkup this morning.
A healthy, happy baby.
23" long and 13 pounds.

She was very unhappy about the 3 vaccine shots.
Also got Rotovirus oral vaccine.

An hour later she threw up clear liquid.
Probably the vaccine.
Then she got the dry heaves.
When she quieted a bit, my daughter breast fed her to comfort her and try and ease her.

As soon as she finished nursing, Charlotte threw everything up and started heaving again.

Our daughter got her quieted again and she fell asleep.
She was telling me about this on the phone when Charlotte woke up and started the heaves again.

They're off to the doctor (or hospital?) a couple of blocks away and here we sit 1500 miles away in Alabama.
Waiting to hear something.
damn damn damn

Sorry to hear the little one's reacting so badly to the vaccine. Can't imagine what your daughter and the dad are going through...

8. Got her on the phone now.
They're back home.
Charlotte slept for a while at the doctor's office.
She (doc) said probably a reaction to the oral vaccine.
She examined her.
Not worried.

And now Charlotte is cooing and smiling and doing all the standard baby stuff.

And I'm about 100 years old.

While I was waiting to hear I looked up side effects to Rotovirus oral vaccine and found out about Intussusception.
"Intussusception occurs when one portion of the bowel slides into the next, much like the pieces of a telescope. When this occurs, it creates an obstruction in the bowel, with the walls of the intestines pressing against one another. This, in turn, leads to swelling, inflammation, and decreased blood flow to the intestines involved."
Vomiting is one of the symptoms.
Holy shit.

Anyway, I guess it's not that.
Thanks for all your concern and good wishes.

13. I really shouldn't google ailments/symptoms.
A couple of years ago I was convinced I had testicular cancer.
I didn't.

11. It is very hard being so far away.
Your daughter and family live near a good hospital and only a few miles from the collection of hospitals in Boston. Hope little Charlotte is okay:hug:

14. True. They're just 2 blocks from Melrose-Wakefield hospital.
And the pediatrician is just across the street from that.

16. A friend's son died unexpectedly a few weeks ago.
He was in his 30s.
Good looking guy, even did some modeling.
Engaged to be married.

Had a bout of colitis and his doc hospitalized him to treat it.
A relatively simple procedure.
He contracted a staph infection and died.

I just don't know how I would deal with something like that.
And that's all I thought about for 2 hours this morning.
I thought Miz t. was going to pass out. Had to sit her down and put her head between her knees.
We didn't quite make it to hysterics, but close.
And she's not that kind of person.

Folks, life is a fucking crapshoot.
But you already knew that.

17. Thank goodness she's okay.
It's hard being so far away. My husband's family is in Europe, and because of the intricacies of immigration, he's not allowed to leave the country for another month or two. We're praying that nothing happens in that time!

I am very glad to hear Charlotte is doing well.

Sounds like it's the vaccines, but it's hard to see a baby so sick.

21. Final update on Charlotte.
Fully recovered now.
Like nothing ever happened.
Sure gave us a bad morning.
Things can happen so quickly.
Especially with little ones.

Many thanks for all the kind thoughts and good wishes.
Really, it means a lot to us.
In spite of the fact that I do have a life away from here, it's comforting to have friends like this on DU.
