They want $300 freaking dollars to fix my car horn
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 04:38 PM by libnnc
How in holy hell can a horn for a '93 Eagle Summit cost $200 bucks? Plus $85 for the "diagnostic".

I should have been a mechanic.

2. Get one of these bad boys!

They can't be more than a couple bucks at best and for all the times you really use your horn....

3. Sod that expense, give the blind twits the finger and yell loudly instead.
That's what I do, and my horn works... (but it's never been a particularly loud one...)

That's the trouble with these chain stores. Overcharge. The mom'n'pop days; the workers had less overhead to pay off (no big CEO, CIO, CFO, COO, C_O, et cetera)

5. We have these pesky "inspections" down here in NC
The horn is one of the things they check. If it doesn't work, you don't get your inspection sticker.

No sticker = BIG fucking ticket from the coppers.

4. ouch
can you go to a junk yard and find one there? or how about calling around to car part places and see if they have a rebuilt one

wiper motor my partner's truck shit the bed, but originally the mechanic wanted a "brazillion" dollars for part/labor - we asked him if he would do the work if we brought him the part, he had no problem with that

we went to a junk yard and got the wiper motor for about $75, with labor total cost was around $150

7. That's an ideer
I don't think I could get the dealer peeps to do that but I could probably get a service station mechanic to do it.

I'll look in to that option. My inspection sticker is good until next May so I've got some time before I *really* have to get it fixed.

10. You're going to a dealership for a car that's presumably not under warranty?
My limited experience is that small shops are almost always cheaper and there are some good ones in your area.

12. I know I know...I'm going to take it to Parkway Texaco
I think I'll try to get the horn on my own and see how much they'll charge me to install it.

Taking it to the dealer was the SO's idea :eyes:

And now she doesn't want to spend that much $$ on it right now. more :eyes:

16. Junkyard or plain ole auto parts dealer.
Either one should be able to hook you up with a unit for $50.

Yeah, the fuse is almost always hooked to something else, like the radio or something, too.

9. I am now the proud owner of a $300 headlight.
That's what the Chrysler dealer charged to replace the unit.
I've found another garage.

11. Here's the easy part:
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 05:01 PM by Oeditpus Rex
$23.95

The hard (and expensive) part is doing the work, if you don't have the tools or the know-how. That's how mechanics et al can charge so much.

Edit: My BIL has an Eagle Summit — a '92, I believe. Lemme call him and ask if he's ever messed with the horn. It may be simple.

13. That's bullshit. Let me do some calling around...
I know lots of good mechanincs. Since you're in my state, maybe we can get something done. At least some good advice, if I can get some.

20. First you must determine if it is the horn itself,
the switch, the relay, or the fuse. An inexpensive volt/ohm meter and a few minutes learning how to use it can save many dollars in repairs. Also, if you take your auto in to be repaired, don't tell them that the horn is bad. Just tell them that the horn doesn't work. Otherwise you're getting a bill for the most expensive part when it may have been something cheap and easy like the relay.

Also be sure to ask for the old parts.

Regards, Mugu
