Whose Your Favorite TV Chef?
I watch a lot of FoodTV and some chef shows on other cable channels. I have some favorites and then I have some I can not stand. I really like Alton Brown - his shows are so fun and educational -- His Feasting On Asphalt 2 - River Run was the best!

I didn't like Ramsey until I started watching his original BBC "Kitchen Nightmares."

I caught five minutes of the American version and it's a case-study in everything wrong with American television.

40. Love Bourdain, but the best show I ever saw him do wasn't food
It was going to be about Lebanese cuisine and his crew got caught when Hamas & Israel started warring right where he was. he whole show was about how they were trying to get the hell out of there; finally they were rescued by the US Marines who came to evacuate Euros and Americans. It was an absolutely incredible, emotional piece of work. Several relatives of the crew didn't make it. The outcome was in doubt right up until the end.

His show - It comes on here at 4:00 every day - then, after the kids are sleeping, I watch it. It is fun to see how nervous he gets when he sneaks up on a victim and asks if he can go home and cook for them....

24. it's really good, they make one two recipes and they also test kitchen equipment
and different brands of various food items, ie...best bacon, store bought bbq sauce and so on.

I don't know if he's done anything very recently but evidently he had a massive heart attack several years back and has changed his cooking style hugely. Not nearly as much fun.

My mom used to watch him on Saturdays, I think. He'd always invite one of the ladies in the audience to share his meal with him. We never were able to prepare any of his meals, though. They invariably called for alcohol, and we lived in a dry county!

I don't remember much about the actual recipes and I'm sure my mom never actually cooked any of them but I thought he was so exotic and interesting. Hey, it made sense when I was 5 :)

was fine before he became a Mormon and quit getting drunk on his show- I watched that when I was a kid and I am about to turn 51.... He inspired me to really love cooking - Then there was the wonderful Julia Childs - The French Chef. She is still the Queen of all chef shows

on the food network - and other places on the tv dial - Emeril has a friend from Hawaii who comes on his show a couple times a year - Sam Choy:


Curtis Stone (see above in this thread) The Take Home Chef often cooks Spanish food including Tapas... He also does curry (He is a very accomplished at Indian food)

I love Martin Yan - His goofy sense of humor is a kick.

As for the Argentinean BBQ pit - I saw a cooking show on the Travel Channel a couple of years ago about that but would like to see more.

45. Keith Floyd and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall
Floyd is a somewhat eccentric English television cook - he tended to travel around exploring a local cuisine (and alcohol production). A typical episode would include him setting up cooking apparatus in the middle of the town square and attempting to cook whilst a large crowd gathered round mumbling in the relevant foreign language, and he would always be two-sheets to the wind whilst cooking with a constantly emptying glass of wine in hand.

Fearnley-Whittingstall is even more eccentric...he became famous for cooking and serving a placenta on television. These days he is a firm supporter of back-to-nature cooking running his own farm. His latest television series took folk who live off 'ready-meals' and introduced them to the realities of food production, including trips to the abattoir.

Meat and The River Cottage Family Cookbook.....

I've never seen him on TV, but his books are excellent and help my wife and I teach the kids how important it is to respect what you eat.

57. He does teach a philosophy of food
rather than merely provide a few recipes - that's what I like about it, he goes much 'deeper' than merely giving a list of ingredients and how to combine them.

On Edit, how could I forget Daisy Martinez' show, "Daisy Cooks" I also just like her, she has a very sweet and kind TV persona.

The idea of humanely raised meat, local produce and nose to tail eating has been heartily embraced at our house, and subsequently, we go out to eat much less often and we eat far better food. If you take The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating by Fergus Henderson, The River Cottage Meat Book by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution by Alice Waters, that would pretty much describe how I approach food ethically.

I also like America's Test Kitchen mostly because I like the cooks.

Haven't seen anything on the Food (Porn) Network in many many months, I used to like Alton Brown because his show had some nice quirks, but, the Food Network is dark at our house, it represents, to me at least, an unethical approach to eating.

80. Yeah, it's far better than Hell's Kitchen.
He doesn't just abuse people. He goes into real restaurants, figures out where the problems are, and addresses them. He's still acerbic, but it provides context, it makes sense.

I'm surprised at the range of knowledge. He'll cover sanitation problems in a little hole-in-the-wall lunch shop, or deal with an over-enthusiastic young chef in a michelin star restaurant.

It's not really about food with him, it's more about a chemistry lesson.

My philosophy is food is pretty naturalistic - whereas he seems to want to take everything into a science lab.

...is that the subject of the Fat Duck being rated the top, or one of the top resteraunts in the world has come up once or twice on DU and it has been known to cause ahem "heated discussion" on here as people try and work out what's going on with his menu.

77. I love both of these too.
for the first several episodes my husband watched, Bayless annoyed the hell out of me. now I appreciate how passionate he gets when he talks quietly and close to the camera.

Ming is just awesome. I wish my hubbie would try more of his recipes.

we have books by both of them (and Daisy too - do you watch her?)

on Two Fat Ladies and grew up amazed and not knowing quite what to make of Julia Child. I came to appreciate her when I was older.

Now I casually will watch Alton Brown from time to time and I appreciate the way he goes into the processes and sometimes chemistry of what is going on as you cook and he often finds interesting and memorable ways of debunking certain cooking myths or proving and recommending others.

95. I'm trying to find a way to launch the cause for Jennifer Patterson's canonisation
If you've never read the history of her life you should do, it's absolutely fascinating. Anybody's whose funeral includes solemn Mass entirely in Latin, and a biker's helmet on the coffin has got something to her (b.t.w., the funeral was in the Brompton Oratory, which you may remember from your visitation).

Clarissa Dickson-Wright did another series over here - "Clarissa and the Countryman" which was basically a celebration of the British countryside, not a food programme (though one can't avoid food if one's talking about the country).

Other shows I like:

Dinner Impossible

Hell's Kitchen (my FAVORITE reality show!)

I'm not a huge fan of Guy Fieri, but I do enjoy his "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" show.

I like Giada when she isn't getting all drunk and chocolaty.

I like Paula Deen when she makes sexual innuendos, but not too many.

I really can't stand Rachel Ray or Sandra Lee

Emeril is fun, and it was the show we watched when my daughter was 2-3 years old that helped her fall asleep during some rough patches, so I am ever grateful to him for that.

I always give the new shows a shot, like the new latin show, which is okay (I love many of her recipes and I wish I could remember her name) and I watched the most recent "Next Food Network Star," Amy, start her series (hoping she will get better with time).

Tyler Florence has some killer recipes, especially for red meat

and even though Bobby Flay is a bit arrogant at times, I personally love to grill so I find his shows really helpful.

I am watching "The Next Iron Chef" curiously. Liking it, tentatively. The regular show really cracks me up ... but I love Alton's role there too.

99. I used to watch Food Network (is it now FoodTV?)
All the time when I used to live in the US. Now that I live in the UK, I've started to really like watching Saturday Kitchen, Ready Steady Cook, and (this series just finished) The Restaurant.

I liked Ramsay before I came here but there's another chef that's replaced the top spot. Raymond Blanc:



The reason why? Blanc was so gentle with all the people who was competing to open a restaurant with him in "The Restaurant". It's a concept I seriously think will come to the US.... just wondering who'll be the chef to host it.

I'm liking James Martin (host of Saturday Kitchen) and I'm looking into his recipes that frequently get published in the Good Food Magazine. On Ready Steady Cook, I think Gino D'Acampo is so cute:



My fiance and I often comment that he makes pasta-making look so easy.

Out of all the chefs I've mentioned, I've been to one of their restaurants. I went to Boxwood Cafe (Gordon Ramsay's restaurant) and it was DELICIOUS! It's expensive but it's quite nice to have a wee splurge every once in a while! :-)
