One of my top Bruce songs.
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 05:38 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
The versions on Youtube are pretty shitty, but here're the lyrics nonetheless.

The screen door slams;
Mary's dress waves.
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays.
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely--
Hey, that's me, and I want you only.
Don't turn me home again;
I just can't face myself alone again.

Don't run back inside,
Darling, you know just what I'm here for.
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore--
Show a little faith; there's magic in the night.
You ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright.
Oh, and that's alright with me...

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain--
Make crosses from your lovers,
Throw roses in the rain,
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets.
Well now, I'm no hero;
That's understood.
All the redemption I can offer, girl,
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow.

Hey, what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair?
Well, the night's busting open;
These two lanes will take us anywhere.
We got one last chance to make it real,
To trade in these wings on some wheels.

Climb in back;
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks.
Oh, oh--come take my hand,
Riding out tonight to case the promised land.
Oh, oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
Oh Thunder Road--
Lying out there like a killer in the sun.
Hey, I know it's late; we can make it if we run.
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight, take hold--
Thunder Road.

Well, I got this guitar,
And I learned how to make it talk,
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat.
The door's open but the ride, it ain't free,
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken,
But tonight we'll be free--
All the promises'll be broken.

There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away;
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets.
They scream your name at night in the street;
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet,
And in the lonely cool before dawn,
You hear their engines roaring on,
But when you get to the porch, they're gone
On the wind, so Mary, climb in.
It's a town full of losers,
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

5. by my DU name , I'm obviously a big Bruce fan,
and I agree, that even for Bruce, these are amazing lyrics. Its also the very first song I ever saw Bruce play; the opening song (solo on the piano before the band hit the stage) at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, Sept. 1975.

9. That's amazing
You're the second DUer who's posted something about Bruce that I responded to; and when they responded back, it turned out I have a bootleg ( vinyl) of a show they saw. ( The other was a DUer who was at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ in '78---three record set) And its not like I have a lot of Springsteen bootlegs either; in fact just three on vinyl, and a DUer was at two of 'em. I've got a two record set of the one you saw; it was broadcast on radio-----Westwood radio network or something?? Long, funny story in the middle of Kitty's Back (which is pretty close with Thunder Road among my all-time favorite Springsteen songs) involving the rest of the band flying some female fan everywhere they play ( "I get off the plane and there she is...where's the receipts?). Encores included the Detroit Medley, The Byrds' Goin Back, and there was another funnier than hell story as both the intro and fade-out of Manfred Mann's Pretty Flamingo. Also just watched the you tube link of O'Reilly talking about him; usually will not not listen to that asshole. or any of em for two seconds, but watched this one, and burst out laughing out loud more than once.

10. Cool, I don't have that show......
Edited on Wed Oct-17-07 08:24 PM by Bennyboy
I was living in LA at the time. Wife, baby and me, in a little house on 2rd Ave in Pomona. I was trying to be a comedian/actor/model/landscaper. Not doing well at any of them.

We had no friends, no family in the area and the station KRQR was my only friend. I was listening one night and they had a contest. I won the tickets to the show. I had never knowingly heard one note of his music. I was into the Grateful Dead then (as now LOL)so I listened to that type of music mostly.

The seek before the show he was on TIME and NEWSWEEK. "the New Dylan" they all said. I am like yeah right. That, to me was a huge strike against him. the press coverage was another. I went to the show with the expectation of hating it.

The guy danced on my table for three hours. Simply incredible, one of the all time great shows for me. I called my friends in Sac and told them all about it and encouraged them to go the show in Sac later that week. None did.

I could not handle it, and said fuck it, we are moving back home. So we moved back between the shows. This time he played longer. He was out front in the line talking to everyone before the show, sigining autographs and shooting the shit.

I have seen every tour he has ever done. For me, with the exception of Michael Franti, the last truly important artist of our time.

Hee is a great show from Winterland from Wolfgangs Vault. Perfect recording and blistering. http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/ConcertDetail.aspx?id=3264|993

7. Here's one of mine:
"Fat man sitting on a little stool
Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you
Hands me the ticket smiles and whispers good luck
Cuddle up angel cuddle up my little dove
We'll ride down baby into this tunnel of love

I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and its just the three of us
You me and all that stuff were so scared of
Gotta ride down baby into this tunnel of love

Theres a crazy mirror showing us both in 5-d
I'm laughing at you you're laughing at me
There's a room of shadows that gets so dark brother
It's easy for two people to lose each other in this tunnel of love

It ought to be easy ought to be simple enough
Man meets woman and they fall in love
But the house is haunted and the ride gets rough
And youve got to learn to live with what you cant rise above if you want to ride on down in through this tunnel of love"

I'll see if I can find a clip.

found the lyrics, maybe a sound clip at amazon.

I remember how rough your hand felt on mine
On my wedding day
And the tears cried on my shoulder
I couldn't turn away
Well so much has happened to me
That I don't understand
All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach
Tracing your footprints in the sand
Trying to walk like a man

By Our Lady Of The Roses
We lived in the shadow of the elms
I remember ma draggin' me and my sister up the street to the church
Whenever she heard those wedding bells
Well would they ever look so happy again
The handsome groom and his bride
As they stepped into that long black limousine
For their mystery ride
Well tonight you step away from me
And alone at the alter I stand
And as I watch my bride coming down the aisle I pray
For the strength to walk like a man

Well now the years have gone and I've grown
From that seed you've sown
But I didn't think there'd be so many steps
I'd have to learn on my own
Well I was young and I didn't know what to do
When I saw your best steps stolen away from you
Now I'll do what I can
I'll walk like a man
And I'll keep on walkin'

And I LOVE Springsteen; everything he does. Thunder Road tops my list, though, what a wordsmith he is. Genius.

(edited to make sense after my sixth 10+ hour workday in a row).

11. That IS a great one. I'm selling out, though
I loved "Streets of Philadelphia" because it was a beautiful song that really caught the mood of the flick it was written for.

I was bruised and battered and I couldn't tell
what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window I didn't know
my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
wasting away
On the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
just to slip this skin

The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia

14. When Love Comes To Town - U2
"When Love Comes To Town"

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves before love rescued me
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said

When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

Used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing before love came to town
I ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town

When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town
When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

When I woke up I was sleeping on the street
I felt the world was dancing and I was dirt beneath their feet
When I looked up I saw the Devil looking down
But my Lord he played the guitar the day love came to town
I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when the pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

(This song features co-lead vocals from BB King)
