The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 10/26/07
"Sonnet 60"

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown'd,
Crooked elipses 'gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

—William Shakespeare

1. Okay, if my beloved Big Willie gets ignored by the Lounge,
I will be very sad.

4. His Sonnets are, I think, better than many of his plays.
(I'm not dissing the plays, mind you. I just think the sonnets deserve more attention.)

8. I had a Shakespeare prof who felt the same.
And then wrote a book on the sonnets to get her tenure.

7. This sonnet is one of the first works by Shakespeare I ever read.
I did Macbeth, R&J, then this one.

6. I don't post in these threads, BlueIris, but I always enjoy them.
Sorry for not showing appreciation before!

And you know, that's how I've felt for the last couple years.

So melancholy, those verses!
