Should I apologize to this guy?

I'm outside checking out fluids on our vehicles and a neighbor wanders over and starts chatting. He sees the DU sticker on the car and asks about it. I tell him that it is a progressive web site that has people of differing opinions, but are basically of like mind. He starts ranting about "niggers, faggots, commies, un American", and on and on. I am getting angry and told him that he is the definition of stupidity. I also told a few other things which I will leave out. Now he seems to think I owe him an apology. I say "fuck him". And I would like to apologize to anyone who may have read this post. Please don't take any of the above stuff personally, I was just repeating what this guy said. I will also apologize to my brethren on DU for my foul language. But not to the neighbor. I'm still a bit steamed over this.

You didn't start the conversation. He could have politely asked you what you found worthwhile about DU or progressive thought. But he didn't. So, nuts to him.

OTOH, if you guys have to share resources and this would make future encounters unpleasant, you might want to consider apologizing for the tone of your speech, not the content.

he owes you an apology for his hate filled comments - the fact he couldn't deal with the reaction of someone who thinks like a human being is his problem not yours. We have to quit tolerating this crap and looking the other way to avoid conflict. These people are part of why this country cannot move forward. Tough $hit for him.

You didn't start the conversation. You weren't bigoted. You didn't refer to anyone has a 'nigger' or 'faggot' or 'commie'.

The guy's hopeless. Let him apologize to you.

He responded in a very insulting manner to the fact that you belong to a progressive forum. He came into your space, asking about your sticker, and then insults you? Hell no you shouldn't apologize. An apology is formal recognition that YOU did something wrong.

Now if you went into his space, asked about a freeper bumpersticker, then started calling people with his beliefs redneck racist a**holes, then sure, you should apologize. But that's not how it happened.

Ask him a question that I like to ask freepers:

What good thing has Bush ever done for you?

Then let him spend a few hours thinking about it.

1. He wouldn't appreciate it.
2. He'd use it as an opportunity to start bashing all over again.
3. You don't need the aggravation.

On the other hand, if an apology would be going with who you are, then do it, and screw his reaction.
