7. Both are in Major League Baseball, but...
it is divided into two leagues, the American and the National. Until recently, they operated more or less independently, with the two "pennant winners" meeting in the World Series. (It's been called that since long before there was even a team in Toronto.) The Red Sox are in the American League, while the Cubs are in the National. The joke is that the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908, and the Red Sox hadn't from 1918 through 2004.
