I'm kind of torn. There's some interesting subplots, but a couple of good ideas have been brought up only to be resolved nearly immediately, like the guy who killed Dexter's mom.

It's still better than average, but doesn't quite have the way out of the box edge the first season had.

5. The season is far different than the book.
They have kept part of the book, but have excluded other parts so far.

I really dislike Rita this season. I find her needy, obsessive, and annoying. I much prefer the idea of Dexter with Lyla, although I don't know that a relationship would be the best thing for either of them.

I am astounded at some of the things we find out about Harry and Dexter's mother! :wow: It at least makes more sense as to why Harry chose to keep Dex. Although, it makes me also wonder if Dexter was Harry's son and Biney wasn't. It would fit if what that guy who killed Dexter's mother said.

I am hoping that the season will continue to get better. It was agonizing watching Dexter screw up in the first couple of episodes. He just wouldn't make those kinds of mistakes. If Dexter felt the discomfort I felt during his ritual, I can completely understand him screwing up. And Doakes following him around like a vampire doesn't make for an easy night of fun for Dexter.

Good to see another Dexter fan! :hi:

8. I dislike Rita this season for OPPOSITE reason--she doesn't seem like insecure person she was last
season.

The stuff about his dad was bad, but then the whole business with one of mom's killers was tied up so quickly, and Lila stayed his hand, which made the whole thing unsatisfying.

One irony I noticed though is I get frustrated when he DOESN'T kill people.

The first season deviated in small ways from the book, but they are going farther afield this time.

11. I read that this season (and presumably future seasons) will not be following any of the books.
Obviously, since there were a few BIG differences between the show and the first book. (Don't want to spoil it for anybody.)

14. one of the differences could be saved for later use SPOILER ALERT if you haven't read book
for example, Biney could have told Deborah the backstory of Dexter and himself, and she didn't choose to share that knowledge with Dex, but she could use it at a crucial moment to throw Lundy off the scent.

6. Dexter's new relationship is very interesting.

He will now reveal more of his "dark passenger". I like the interaction between Dexter's sister and the head of the FBI team. I'm not sure the relationship between Doakes and the Lieutenant adds anything to the show.

7. I like the relationship between Deb and Lundy, too.
It's much more developed than in the book, I think.

9. Doakes, Lieutenant, & Captain serve similar purpose: they make Dexter look normal by comparison
He's trying so hard to appear normal, that he is actually nicer than average while Doakes is a tormented killer and captain & lieutenant blithely screw others to get what they want.

12. The ongoing tension or electricity of the show
is whether Dexter will get caught. The relationship between Deb and Lundy speaks directly to that. Will Deb help Lundy to catch her brother? What if she breaks the case? Will she arrest Dexter?

When Doakes was tailing Dexter, it contributed to the tension. Maybe I'm just not seeing it now, but I don't see any direction the relationship between Lieutenant & Doakes might take that would effect Dexter. It seems more of a soap opera.
