Help! Electricity question
Still have fuses here at home. Was in the kitchen when it went black--my burrito didn't quite get very hot. Called downstairs to my friend Steve who owns the house, and asked him to put in a new fuse. He went down and couldn't figure it out--it seems ALL the power in the apartment, except for the front room, went dead. Why the front room got spared, don't know, but the front room has the computer, TV and other AV stuff, so I still have entertainment until I need to go to bed in the dark.

Steve is calling the electrician in the morning--he asked me if that was okay because of the inherent problem of hiring someone on a Sunday night, and I'm fine with that. So I just have to make sure I've covered with a few extra blankets tonight.

But can't figure it out--if it wasn't a fuse (because too many rooms went dead), then what could it be? Is there some other thing it could be? Eek. It's gonna be a cold night.....

3. Oh shit.
Sounds like one of the main fuses for your unit.

4. probably still a fuse
or else a wire burnt through

sometimes a fuse will not burn through the copper but will bulge up the plastic and for all practical purposes quit working.

However, the fact that you have one room still operating and the rest aren't, says that there probably were too many things on that fuse, or perhaps a wire burnt

I'm not an electrician, just have lived in a house with fuses until it was rewired.

5. What Southpawkicker said
Been there, done that. Had an electrician put in a bigger breaker box to handle the bigger load of our electronic age (house is about 65 -70 years old) Got more power to the house to accommodate the needs of a hot water heating system and Havocdad has been re-wiring the house, on area at a time, himself. With the areas on more circuits, things are working just peachy now.

6. Ummmmm
I had a problem once where part of the house had power and part didn't. No breakers flipped. Nothing that seemed out of the ordinary. Until I walked outside and looked at the electric line that ran from the pole to my house. That line as you know, is two twisted cables. One of those cables had come apart and was shooting sparks. Called the electric company and there was a repair guy here pronto. From the time I called until the repair and reinstallation of the line was completed took a total of about 15 minutes - in the dark after 10 pm.

Hope your problem is more benign.....
