1. Prilosec. Once a day. Works like a voodoo charm
It won't help immediately. But if you take it every day, you won't have it. Any CVS or pharmacy has it in boxes of 14, 28 or 42.

Every day. Trust me; I have it bad, and this stuff works.

Oh, and DON'T DRINK MILK if it's happening. That only makes it worse.

Oh now you tell me,!!!! I love milk, and stupid me had a late night snack Saturday night with milk
and I had the worst acid reflux that 'burned' my throat, causing a 'sore throat' and flu like symptoms...........:hi:

33. same here
I learned a while back what trigger foods and beverages to avoid. Took a prescription drug daily for a couple of years. Cost twice as much as Prilosec. Prilosec works better for me. Doesn't work for my sister though.

I take Prilosec as needed.

I don't drink milk, eat tomato sauce or tomato suace based dishes or peppermint.

I found soy milk that is pretty good and I eat white pizzas or pesto pizzas and avoid the mints.

I will try Prevacid, have always just chewed up like 4 tums at a time and it does the trick, but would like something that will last longer

9. My husband had it until he quit smoking.
I didn't know there was a correlation between the two things, but his got MUCH better after he quit.

10. I used to take a ton of Pepcid, but last year I just
quit the latte habit, cut way back on coffee, and started drinking a lot of green tea instead. Problem pretty much went away.

12. People I know swear by veggie enzymes
they say it works better than prilosec and all the other pharm put together. It's natural so you won't have any side effects. As we get older we produce less enzymes. Go to a health food store, and they will most likely tell you their customers swear by it. Google "veggie enzymes" It is also good for upset stomachs.

14. Norvasc and Prilosec
I have a condition called esophageal spasms that causes acid reflux-type symptoms. It's controlled with Norvasc (a blood pressure medication, oddly enough) and prilosec.

I recommend see a GI if you haven't already...

17. I did.

After I changed my diet to completely eliminate all soft drinks, and cut down my coffee intake to only 1 or (rarely) 2 medium-large cups a day, I was able to get off of the prescription that my MD gave me.

Luckily for me, I'm still able to eat all the spicy food that I love. Take hot food away from me, and I would probably waste away to nothing.

It really sucked. Wreaked havoc with my sex life until I got it under control. Nothing like a little acid reflux to kill the mood. :eyes:

19. Diagnosed with GERD, took Nexium for years.
Quit taking it when my internist verified what my sister had found on the Internets, that Nexium - in fact most if not all similar drugs - don't just reduce stomach acid but eliminate it. Which means food just goes right through you. Still need it after I've foolishly eaten a highly spiced food but do my best to avoid it. Avoid both.

A nutritionist told me to try it.She said for some people hot spices trick the stomach into producing less bile.It took a couple of weeks to take effect but once it did the reflux stopped and has not returned in 6 years.

it really sucked the first week.
The entrance and the exit to my digestive system were on fire most of the time.
Spicy foods never have given me heartburn.What The Nutritionist told me was that the reflux is caused by the stomach producing way to much bile juice which would back up into the esophagus.
She said that for some people the spices would do naturally what the prescription drugs do.
Like I said it worked for me.

That said,I also gotta say don't take my advice without consulting with a medical professional.

30. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
I used to have acid reflux. Had it for years. If I had an attack of it unexpectedly, I just drank water, over and over and over again til it helped make it go go away. Now, I read that reflux is from the stomach having not ENOUGH hydrochloric acid, so apple cider vinegar (like a teaspoon per glass of water or however else you prefer to take it-- salad dressing or whatever!) helps your stomach build more hydrochloric acid. Lemon juice (from the lemon itself) also assists in this. Cayenne pepper, believe it or not, does also.

Take the vinegar, diluted in water several times a day and especially for instant relief (you will appear to feel more burning for a moment before the relief comes) and do it regularly until you find you are forgetting to drink it because your acid reflux is gone, but keep up a maintenance level anyway.

Then you can have the occasional sin and eat something that will usually bring it on --- once in awhile, but mostly avoid those foods too. I didn't have to give up coffee, but fish & chips are a major no-no for me.

31. Cheapest antacid I can find...
preferably calcium, not sodium, based. A couple of these when it hits and I'm fine. Best stuff was Chooz gum, but I haven't seen that around in a while.

Got a bottle of cheap house brand Tums for the car and one for the kitchen, 'cause I never know when it will hit, although it's not nearly as bad or as often as when I used to drink a lot more.

Now it happens because I didn't eat, or because the bed kinda slopes the wrong way and I'm sleeping head down.

32. My husband was cured by changing his diet - nothing short of miraculous
My husband had very serious acid reflux that was getting progressively
worse. He was admitted to the emergency room twice in 3 years when it got
so bad that he could not catch his breath and he ended up taking Prilosec
every day - which did help.

However, this past April we went on the Zone Diet, basically
NO gluten NO refined flour/bread/rice/potatoes/carrots and lots of fruits
and veggies and it has been nothing short of miraculous.

He sleeps through the night now and hasn't had any reflux in months.


We used to think it was tomatoes or wine or the occasional margarita we enjoyed
at our local Mexican restaurant, but it was the high fructose corn syrup and
refined flour that was doing it.
I truly believe this diet saved his life.

34. beware the OTC remedies
I was taking prilosec until I learned that people taking the proton pump meds are quite a bit more likely to get pneumonia, because stomach acid has the function of killing various bacteria -- a useful function!

I was taking Pepcid until I learned that some OTC reflux meds can inhibit the absorption of K vitamins, causing inexplicable fatigue. Wow. I had been experiencing severe fatigue after taking my morning Extra Strength Pepcid.

So I lost fifteen pounds and started eating a little differently. Heartburn virtually gone. I now need something only a couple of times a week if I have a tuna sandwich. For some reason, that's the worst for me.

35. Prilosec. Also made some changes in my diet.

Cut down to 1 cup of coffee per day, rarely eat chocolate, dishes with lots of tomato.

Don't eat for AT LEAST one hour--preferable more--before lying down for a nap or to sleep.

It all pretty much works for me.

I take " the little purple pill", Nexium.

Unfortunately, it's the only one that helps me
and it's the most expensive.( I think)

Even with Nexium, some acid reflux still breaks
through, though.

It is irritated by a hiatal hernia that I have. It is extremely bothersome and uncomfortable at times but Prevacid will usually control it.
